How to Play Texas Hold'em Poker
Transcript of How to Play Texas Hold'em Poker
Texas Hold'em Poker
Stay in the game by putting the equivalent amount in the pot.
History of the Game
After the game spread throughout Texas,
hold 'em was introduced to Las Vegas in 1967
by a group of Texan gamblers and card players, including Crandell Addington,
, and Amarillo Slim.
The common currency used on poker games is "Chips". It is used to represent money. You may use anything you like. You will bet using this, placing your bet in the middle of the table: the "pot".
Poker Hand Rankings
Quit the game by putting your cards face down on the table.
Put more than the last player put in the pot.
Although little is known about the invention of Texas hold 'em, the Texas State Legislature officially recognizes
Robstown, Texas, United States as the game's birthplace
, dating the game to the early 1900s.
For several years
the Golden Nugget Casino in Downtown Las Vegas was the only casino in Las Vegas to offer the game.
At that time, the Golden Nugget's poker room was "truly a 'sawdust joint,' with…oiled sawdust covering the floors."
Because of its location and decor, this poker room did not receive many rich drop-in clients, and as a result, professional players sought a more prominent location.
In 1969, the Las Vegas professionals were invited to play Texas hold 'em at the entrance of the now-demolished Dunes Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
This prominent location, and the relative inexperience of poker players with Texas hold 'em, resulted in a very remunerative game for professional players.
Addington said the first time he saw the game was in 1959. "They didn't call it Texas hold 'em at the time, they just called it hold 'em.… I thought then that if it were to catch on, it would become the game. Draw poker, you bet only twice;
hold 'em, you bet four times. That meant you could play strategically.
This was more of a thinking man's game."
-Bluffing is common here
May bet higher than Big Blind

Table Setup / Positions
Players may bet or raise any amount over the minimum raise in this game type. (may raise up to all "chips" the player has at the table.. referred to as "All-In")
Players may only bet or raise a "set" amount in this game type.
"The Flop": After the 1st betting round, the dealer deals 3 face up community cards. Meaning everyone can (and will) use them in combination with their own hole cards to make the best hand.
Options between Flop / Turn & After River
- requires no chips
- requires minimum raised chips
- you set required chips
- requires no chips
"The Turn": After 2nd betting round, a single community card called The Turn is dealt, followed by a 3rd betting round.
"The River": A final single community card called The River is then dealt, followed by a 4th betting round.
When you look at your cards, lift them off the table just a little bit.
Try not to tell how strong or how poor your hands are. "Poker Face"! A hat, headphones, and sunglasses will take care of masking your facial tells.
You can play with 2 players (heads up) - 10 players (casino table)
Showdown: If more than one player remains after the last betting round, all remaining players expose and compare their hands to determine the winner or winners. The winner takes the "pot".
Alcohol.. DON'T DRINK IT!
If you feel the need to do so, do it socially. Only 1 or two per hour, poker is not a game to be impaired while playing unless you like losing money.
You will make consistent poor
decisions and you will not pay
attention to whats going on in
the game which will ultimately
cost you in the long run..
Do not play on "Tilt"
Take a break
if you need one, you will
not always win, things
won't always go your way.
Playing angry or upset can have the same effect as drinking Alcohol, making very poor decisions.
The Button is the Dealer
Beginning: Usually with a 2 blind forced bet structure, Small and Big Blind, along with a previous forced bet called an "Ante". After one
hand is completed, the
person on the left is next
Dealer (the person who
'was' Small Blind)
