Cohousing Features Intentional Neighborhood Design Private Residences & Shared Spaces Resident Ownership & Management The physical design encourages a strong sense of community, amplifying the social, economic and environmental benefits of living near neighbors you know and trust. Each family – singles, couples, single parents, or couples with children –
has its own self-sufficient home with modern amenities.

Common areas – outside green areas, a playground, and the common house* – are designed for daily use to supplement private living areas. The cohousing community is planned, owned and managed by its residents, making decisions of common concern at community meetings. Cohousing? Diverse Applications *Common House Features

or whatever residents decide... Cohousing communities typically range from 10-35 households emphasizing a multi-generational mix singles, couples, families with children, and elders. Personal Privacy + Benefits of Community We can build a better place to live,
a place where we know our neighbors,
a place where we can enjoy a rich sense of community
and contribute to a more sustainable world. Residents participate in the planning and design of the housing development
so that it directly responds to their needs. Non-Hierarchical Structure & Decison-Making Most cohousing groups make all of their decisions by consensus.
No one person (or persons) has authority over others.
As people join the group, each person takes on one or more roles consistent with his or her skills, abilities or interests. Participatory Process History Conceptualized & Built in Denmark Charles coined the word “cohousing”
as the English version of
the Danish word “bofællesskaber,”
which translates to “living communities." Brought to the U.S. by American architects
