Autobiography-a story of a real person's life written by that person

Biography-a story of a real person's life by a different person

Informational-text that provides facts about a variety of topics
Knowing the genre of what you are reading helps you to make sense of the text!
Fiction
Realistic-based on made up characters in realistic settings and situations

Fantasy-based on events or situations that are not possible, like talking animals or magical powers

Historical-a fictional story that takes place during a specific time period with made up characters

Mystery- a suspenseful story about a puzzling event

Science-a fictional story that uses science or technology and may include robots or time travel

What is Genre?
Genres are generally broken down into fiction and non-fiction.

Common types of fiction include realistic, historical, fantasy, mystery, and science fiction.

Common types of non-fiction include biography, autobiography, and expository.

Poetry is another genre of literature.
