argumentative piece and a persuasive piece? What is the goal
of an argumentative essay? The CCSS state: Writing to the Core January 3, 2013
Lorenzo Walker The goal is to convince an audience of the
rightness of a claim being made using
logical reasoning and relevant evidence. In an argumentative essay, students should “not simply adopt other points of view as their own but rather evaluate them critically and constructively” (2010). Some argumentative essays: The Elements of Argumentative Writing include: Toulmin model
to help students develop arguments: * Declare the best solution to a problem
* Argue a certain way of looking at an issue
* Urge adoption of a specific plan of action
Whatever your exact purpose, the argumentative
essay should be composed of a clear thesis/claim
and body paragraphs that offer enough sensible reasons and evidence to support your claim. * a claim (thesis)
* supported by evidence (grounds)of some sort
* a warrant that explains how the evidence supports the claim
* backing supporting the warrants (additional logic or reasoning that
may be necessary to support the warrant)
And may include qualifiers:
* counterclaim that negates or disagrees with the claim (thesis)
* qualifications and rebuttals (counter arguments) that negates or
disagrees with the counterclaim 1. Encourage students to begin by analyzing evidence and use it to determine what claim(s) they can legitimately make in an argument
2. Interpret the evidence to explain what it shows
3. Develop warrants (rules/evidence)that show why the evidence is relevant
4. Use the evidence and the warrants (explanations) to solve the problems (conclusion) Effective Feedback... ...that directs attention to the intended learning has a positive impact on achievement.
...is most effective when it points out strengths in the work and gives guidance for improvement. Five Characteristics of Effective Feedback 1. Effective feedback directs attention to the intended learning, pointing out strengths and offering specific information to guide improvement.
2. Effective feedback occurs during the learning, while there is still time to act on it.
3. Effective feedback addresses partial understanding (if the learning isn't there, feedback isn't going to move it forward).
4. Effective feedback does not do the thinking for the student.
