Problem Statement
A single resident consumes an average of 10 liters of water per day for personal laundry, bathe and dish washing. This amount of water has a potential to be used for energy generation. Apparently, the consuming water is wasted into drainage system after usage. In addition, the electrical tariff is expected to be increased in near future. So, an efficient energy-maker device brings many benefits to help us in terms of saving the electricity.
Objective (s)
To design an alternative and portable power generation device in the form of pico hydroelectric turbine.
To investigate the potential energy of consuming water derived from residential water reservoir to be used as a source of electricity generation.
To compare the performance of various turbine blade type and select the most suitable one for this application.

Collecting Initial Data
Flow rate measurement – to determine the flow rate of consuming water distributed from supplier to end users.
Head measurement – to find out the available pressure of the consuming water.
Estimate the power output - by using the formula:

Generator function - to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
The selection is based on power output, type of electrical load and cost.
Data Analysis
Types of testing:
Open circuit test – to investigate the performance of the generator when it is not connected to any load.
Maximum output test – to observe the pico system maximum output by using a variation of water flow rate.
Battery charging ability test – to measure the energy storage ability of the pico-hydro system. The time taken for the battery to reach maximum storage is recorded.
Further Testing and Improvement
Improve the capability of generator
Optimize the isolation system. Isolation means the separation between water and electric current.
Increase the size of turbine blade
The same type of performance testing will be conducted to test the efficiency of the optimization.
