The National Hockey League (NHL) consits of 30 teams, 23 in the United States and 7 in Canada.

The NHL was formed on 26 Novemeber 1917 with four Canadian teams (only Montreal and Toronto remain) and through a series of expansions, contractions and relocations now consists of the 30 active teams playing today. The first American team to join was Boston in 1924.

Whilst a majority of the teams now come from the United States, Canadian players still make up the majority being 53.3% of total players in the 2011 season while the United States made up 23.9%, the balance coming from European countries.

The ANZ Championship began in 2008 with 10 teams (5 each from Australia and New Zealand) and succeeded a merge between Australia's Commonwealth Bank Trophy and New Zealand's National Bank Cup. In both Australia and New Zealand netball has the highest participation rate of any women's sports.
Internationally it can be said to be the best league in the world as Australia and New Zealand both have dominated the sport on an international scale between the two of them winning every single championship title since 1963
