Transcript of New Jersey
Trent's Town, and New Sweden were two of the major cities in the colony.
Another major city was Princeton, although it was not the biggest.
The Delaware Indians were the first people to live in the New Jersey Colony.
About 8,000 to 20,000 although, Delaware Indians lived in the area when the first Europeans arrived.
Although they were a tribe, they lived in different communities.
Establishing New Jersey
New Jersey was established in 1664, but it was first established by the Dutch. When the Dutch lost the colony, James, the Duke of York, received it.
Religion was not a part of the establishment of the colony, so Quakers, Catholics, Lutherans, Jews, and other religions lived there.
Settlers of New Jersey
For money, settlers worked on farms, mills, and they traded.
They traded a lot of their natural resources.
In the colony, good farmland, timber, furs, coal, and iron ore were the most popular.
-In 1660 the Dutch established one of the major cities of New Jersey called Bergen however, it is now called Jersey City today.
-In 1664 British took control of New Jersey from the Dutch.
-In 1676 New Jersey is divided into East and West Jersey.
-In 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed.
-In 1812 the war of 1812 occurred between the US and Great Britain.

-In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was elected president, though he fought against slavery.
-In 1861 the Civil War broke out, and it was also the same year that Abraham Lincoln stopped slavery as president.

New Jersey's Government
New Jersey was governed as the Royal Colony. A Royal colony was ruled by officials responsible by the reigning ruler of Great Britain. The Royal Colonies had a representative assembly, but it was elected by the people.
