Loss of innocence

faces adversity in the solitude she experiences.
has to take responsibilities forcing her to mature quickly.
Small village of Malaysia
Poor, primitive and deprived area.
Born in Malaysia, Lim was raised in poverty, deprivation, and with the threat of constant parental violence.
She was abandoned by her mother.
In a culture that rarely recognized girls as individuals.
"Journey" is based on her life experience.
She had to overcome the struggle of being a female in a land that favors male roles.
Girl's rite of passage into womanhood.
event on a person's life indicative of a transition from one stage to another (childhood to adulthood).
REVERSAL OF ROLES:There is a dramatic turn of events as the mother is suddenly seen to be in need of care.
sudden grow to maturity and loss of innocence.
Written in 1995.
After the official end of the cold war, 1992.
POINT OF VIEW:
3rd person looking upon the family of a young girl.
main character thoughts and feelings.
lot of description.
negative and dark thoughts.
Ex: " the collars of the men decapitates their heads."
2) THE DREAM
Vivid and frightening imagery.
represents the fear she faces alone as a youth.
gives readers insight into how dark her thoughts are.
The dream demonstrates how child she was since she get scared of the nightmare.
"... malevolent eyes in the darkness, watching."

the mother knows that she will be there for her
The girl helps her mother giving her milk and a warm towel
She cleans the floor, carrying responsibilities

RITE OF PASSAGE
"Her mother instructions were clear enough..."
"The rice was cold but she has warmed the salty soup and fish for her..."
"... wondering what it was that had wakened her [...] It was her mother."
"She was frightened by what she saw.[...] yet some instinctive sympathy, a habit of sex, made her arms and legs move."
"Hot water from the baby's flask, warmed towel, hot thick sweet milk given to that body..."
"As she scrubbed the cloth with soap and scrubbed it in water and poured away the black water she thought of her hands immersed in water [...] as she washed, the girl cried."
Portrays the protective and sensitive nature of women's as mothers.
She burst into tears, this reveals a powerful emotion of rejection and lack of acceptance to this lifestyle. She can not fight the transformation and there is no protection against it.
