The Book Thief
The time period is 1939-1943,during World War ll and when Hitler was in power. The story takes place in Molching,Germany on Himmel street, in the poor part of town. The weather was mostly always snowy.
On the way to her new foster parents, Liesel's little brother dies,they have a burial, and Liesel picks up a book one of the grave diggers left behind, she can't read though. At Liesel's new home, she automatically has a friendship with her father,Hans Hubermann. He teaches her how to read and comforts her when she has nightmares. Her mother, Rosa Hubermann, is mean and cruel, she gives Liesel the job of washing the neighborhoods clothes.She meets her soon-to-be best friend, Rudy Steiner. At a book burning,for Hitler's birthday, Liesel steals her second book.
Rising Action
Liesel gets books for Christmas,she continues to learn how to read, she also goes into the Mayor's wife's library and she reads in there every week. Due to the war, some problems occur such as; Liesel starts stealing books from the library, she steals food with Rudy,they hide a Jew named Max in their basement, always being paranoid about outsiders finding out about Max, he almost dies, bombings start to happen,Hans Hubermann and Alex Steiner get sent to war for punishment, Max is forced to leave, and Liesel gets whipped by nazi members for talking to Max when he was a prisoner of jews walking down the street. Hans comes back from war because of his broken leg, they try to live as best as they can with the war getting worse and little money.
There is a bombing on Himmel Street, and everyone dies asleep.The only survivor is Liesel, she was saved by being in the basement writing a book. She is devastated and in denial. She kisses Rudy and says goodbye to her mama and papa. She drops her book, Death picks it up, Liesel takes her papa's accordion and leaves.
Falling Action
Liesel lives with the mayor and his wife and eventually works at Alex Steiner's shop when Alex returns safely from war. After the war is over, Max comes to the shop and asks for Liesel. They hug,cry and are once again, reunited.

Liesel grows up and has a family and grandchildren. She dies at an old age, when Death picks her soul up, they go for a walk. He gives her the book she wrote when she was little. She is in shock, they talk about the book and then Death tells her his perspective on her life and humans.
Main Character
The main character in the story is Liesel Meminger, also known as The Book Thief. When she arrives in Molching, she is nine years old, she is brave and cares about the peole who love her. She has a passion for books.
