It was the worst possible way to end the year. About 9:40 a.m. on the morning of Dec. 15, Adam Lanza smashed his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in the town of Newtown, Conn., and started shooting.

The school principal and the school psychologist were the first killed, shot as they ran towards Lanza in an attempt to stop the carnage before it began. A school custodian ran through the halls shouting warnings. Someone in the office switched on the intercom to alert teachers. Children were ushered into closets, hidden in corners, and told to keep silent.

Lanza went from classroom to classroom, shooting dead 20 children aged five and six, and three teachers, one of whom had hidden her students but told the gunman they were in the gymnasium. Lanza then shot himself as he heard police closing in. It was later discovered that the attack had begun earlier that day, when Lanza shot and killed his mother while she slept in her bed.
