Transcript of The Looking Glass Wars

Alyss Heart thought life would never be so cruel to her. She was the heir to the powerful queendom the Heart family had ruled for generations. Little did she know that her 7th birthday would bring horrors that would later end with her stranded in a cruel world where no one believed her about anything, even the way her name was spelled. Will Alyss ever make it back to Wonderland and assume the throne that is rightfully hers? Alice in Wonderland The Looking Glass Wars Characters By: Marie Sullivan
Period 6 Theme:
The universal theme of this book is ‘Good triumphs over Evil’. This is because Alyss (Good) has to fight and win against her aunt Redd (evil) in a battle for the throne of the queendom to restore Wonderland back to its former glory. Author's Purpose: The Author’s purpose for writing this book was to entertain the reader. He took a classic tale, and turned it more modern by showing the 'true' story of Alyss Heart. Summary This novel is the ‘true’ story about Alyss in Wonderland. It starts with Alyss’s parents getting murdered by Alyss’s aunt Redd on Alyss’s birthday. Then Alyss escapes into the modern world by falling through the Pool of Tears, and grows up there. She then finds her way back into Wonderland, because her childhood playmate and boy she was in love with, Dodge Anders, shows up and escorts her back to Wonderland. He crashed her wedding, but got there just in time to get to her before The Cat (Redd's assassin with 9 lives) could kill her. She returns to Wonderland where she must face her aunt Redd and become Queen Alyss Heart to restore Wonderland. Alyss Heart The protagonist of the story. The rightful heir to the throne of wonderland, she has a powerful imagination and has dealt with many horrors in her life. Tone The Tone of this book is serious. There is very little joking between the characters, and very few times when characters are goofing around. For example pages 338-347 were very serious, as it was when Alyss fought her Aunt Redd for the Wonderland throne. Setting The setting of this book is both Wonderland (Pages 1-72 and 206-358) and the Modern World (Pages 72-205) and the time period is set in the mid to late 1800’s Hatter Madigan An important character. The body guard for Alyss, he is a trained fighter and has concealed blades that help in tough situations. Redd The Antagonist of the story. She is Alyss’s aunt, and believes she was cheated out of the throne by her younger sister, Genevieve. Dodge Anders An important character. Dodge was the childhood love interest of Alyss, and watched his father get murdered along with the queen. Dodge is bitter, and wants revenge as soon as possible. Bibwit An important character. Bibwit is the teacher of Alyss and was the teacher of her mother. He is a brilliant person, and helps Alyss learn how to use her imagination to its full extent. During Alyss's 7th birthday her Aunt Redd kills her father while he was on a mission. Then she proceeds to Heart Palace, where Alyss is the princess and heir to the Queendom. Redd then kills her sister, Queen Genevieve, and attempts to kill Alyss. Hatter Madigan, obeying his late queen's orders, helps Alyss escape to the Pool of Tears. They jump into the the Pool, but are separated as they travel to the Modern World. Hatter winds up in France, while Alyss winds up in London. Alyss is adopted by the Liddels and spends the next 13 years living with them. Then one day she meets Prince Leopold, who falls in love with her. He asks her to become his wife, and she agrees. Then on the day of her wedding, Dodge Anders, followed closely by The Cat, crash her wedding. Dodge takes her back to Wonderland, where she must learn to use her imagination to its full extent to defeat Redd. Alyss makes it back to Wonderland,
and Bibwit helps her with her imagination.
Redd then finds out Alyss is back in Wonderland,
and orders everyone to hunt her down. Alyss makes it through the Looking Glass Maze
And becomes a full-fledged warrior queen. She
then makes her way to Redd's Palace to fight
her for control of the Queendom. The battle is very intense, as both women are letting their imaginations run amok. Alyss defeats Redd, but Redd manages to escape
so they expect trouble from her in the near future.
Alyss then begins to return Wonderland to its
former glory. Plot Diagram Beginning Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution Figurative Language 1. Page 190. ‘Her black hair rippling down past her shoulders, her skin like smooth, unblemished ivory in the light of the crystal chandeliers. 2. Page 215 ‘A battery of white chessmen jumped from the brush, and a camouflaged pack of Redd’s Cut dealt themselves out with the sound of rapidly opening and closing scissor blades.’ 3. Page 219 ‘Whether it was the unappetizing figure of Jack of Diamonds twirling like a fairy, the expectant, joyous faces crowding around her, or both, Alyss herself couldn’t say.’ 4. Page 227 ‘Redd Moon had risen. Its bloody light burned down on the Chessboard Desert through a cloud clotted sky, toxic vapors burping continuously out of the factory engaged in manufacturing Redd’s war machines. 5. Page 239 ‘Jack of diamonds tramped through the Everlasting Forest carrying a case the size and shape of a bread box.’ Recommendation I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and adventure. This is because this book is full of fantastical events and things (singing flowers, Redd Moon), but is very action packed (the last fight between Alyss and Redd, and most of Dodges' adventures). Conflict The conflict in this story is that Redd believes that she is the rightful queen, because she was the older of the two sisters. But because she never made it to the Looking Glass Maze, she could never be a full warrior queen. Alyss has to fight Redd, because Alyss is the rightful heir to the throne, and had succeeded in becoming a warrior queen. Resolution The characters resolve the conflict by helping Alyss become a warrior queen (by making it through the looking glass maze) , and helping her get into Redd’s palace, so Alyss can fight her evil aunt. Alyss defeats Redd and becomes Queen Alyss Heart. But Redd gets away, so they still expect more trouble from her in the future. Citation The Looking Glass Wars Alyss Heart picture:
