Global/Long Term Effects It was a big eruption and blew ash and smoke into the atmosphere and caused sunlight and heat to be blocked around the world making the earths temperature fall for a little while.
It sent gasses like methane, carbon dioxide and sulpher into the atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse gas level and maybe contributing to global warming. The eruption blasted ash and gases into the atmosphere. Winds carried ash great distances. The ash-covered truck shown here was parked 19 kilometers (12 miles) from Mount St. Helens. Two men who were camped nearby died, suffocating from hot volcanic ash. They were two of 57 known fatalities.
In Yakima, a city in eastern Washington, ash began to fall about an hour after the eruption. It became so dark that lights were turned on all day. Face masks were necessary when people went outside. It took 10 weeks to haul away the ash from Yakima's streets, sidewalks, and roofs. On May 18, 1980, large clouds of ash from the eruption of Mount St. Helens brought more than 500 million tons of ash to parts of Washington, Idaho and Montana. Traces of the ash were also found all over the world, and some remnants of ash particles stayed in the earth’s atmosphere for several years after the eruption in 1980.
In terms of measurable accumulations, the ash also traveled to central states, including parts of Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado, the Dakotas and Nebraska. The longest distance recorded of the ash fallout was nearly 2,000 miles away from the volcano in the state of Oklahoma!
The ash itself caused many problems in the hardest hit regions downwind from Mount St. Helens and around the Northwest. It destroyed crops and clogged machinery, and also impacted ground and air transportation. Although the short-term effects of volcanic ash are costly and often times deadly, ash also restores chemical nutrients to soil. Ash poured down on 15 states and within days, gas from the volcano, encircled the world
