The popular clotting factor begins to be distributed for home use in America.
1973
Blood banks begin screening blood, but this is not fully practiced until the 1980's.

Hepatitis was long considered an "acceptable risk," as treatment vastly extended patient's life expectancy.
Gay men in the US and Sweden- and heterosexual men in Tanzania and Haiti
begin to show signs of what will later be called AIDS.

The Hemophilia Act of 1973 allowed the
establishment of federally funded comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs)
. There are over 140 of these centers across the country today.
The CDC reports the first cases of HIV/AIDS among hemophiliacs and determine the virus was contracted through
contaminated blood
.

CDC warns blood banks of possible contamination issues.

Frenchman Insititut Pasteur finds the HIV Virus.

American Dr. Robert Gallo, claims he discovered the HIV virus, a year after the French discovery.

The CDC reported that an alarmingly high number of
Factor VIII
concentrate, a popular clotting agent for hemophiliacs, was
contaminated with AIDS
. Few patients were expected to live more than the first few years with the virus.
1985
The FDA approves the first HIV antibody test and blood products begin to be tested.

Reagan finally says "AIDS" publicly, Sept. 17, 1985.

The
Normal Heart
, the first AIDS related play opens in New York City.

Clotting factor is still a popular product in hemophiliac homes across the nation despite it's contamination rates.

The US shuts its doors to
HIV positive immigrants.

Magic Johnson announces he has HIV.

Clotting factor is used
for the first time
for hemophilia patients.
1970
The CDC reports the first case of HIV/AIDS among hemophiliacs and that the patients had contracted the desease from tainted blood.

By the late 1980's over 50% of homophiliacs had AIDS, the infection rate being over 90%.
