Modern lit shares some similar qualities with realism and Romanticism. In Modernism things are described as they are, not as they should be. Characters are taken from everyday life and there ordinary people living common lives. Ernest Hemingway is a great example of modernism in that he wrote down to earth books about average people doing average things but he took that average things and made them beautiful with use of brutal detail. He used symbolism to get his points across rather than flat out saying it. While hes adrift at see he is alienated and often feels despair as hes holding on for dear life threw his struggle catching a giant marlin. He comes to think of the fish like him and is almost sad after the struggle is over and the fish is dead. This is modernism because it show the internal struggle of just an average working man who is beging to be hindered by his old age Old Man and the Sea is a brilliant piece of modern literature. It portrays Santiago just a man fishing at sea doing exactly what hes done every day of his life. In away he is the protagonist and antagonist with only himself to talk to for 3 days you get into Santiago's inner psyche or mind. the old mans prestige catch is all but eaten up by sharks on his long drift home. When he returns he has more bones than meat left on his fish but he is to tiered to care and more happy he broke his curse. so he sleeps and prepares for the next day of fishing. MLA WORK CITED
