BHA Butylated Hydroxyanisole tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole: 11 16 2 BHA is a white or yellow solid that has a waxy texture Melting Point: 48 C
Boiling Point: 264 C o o C H O or food preservation: Oxygen reacts preferentially with BHA
over fats and fatty oils, therefore
BHA is an antioxidant and keeps fatty
foods from going rancid. It is commonly used in: Any fatty, oily food like
fast food, butter, yeast,
lard, et cetera Any kind of pet food, bagged,
canned, whatever. Any kind of food that is supposed to have a long shelf life, often it is used in the packaging, giving boxes that waxy feel. Pharmaceutical Preservation: The same principle that applies to food preservation applies here. cosmetic preservation: Same deal as the other two, but don't worry, this next one is gonna change it up. BIOCHEMISTRY rubber products: BHA stabilizes rubber products and can be found in almost anything made of rubber petroleum products: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING BHA stabilizes petroleum products, but is used more
specifically in petroleum-based wax on food packaging in order to stabilize the wax AND act as an antioxidant for the food. POLYMER CHEMISTRY COSMETOLOGY lipstick has more BHA than any other cosmetic fun fact useful properties antioxidant
possibly anticarcinogenic health effects on humans: possibly carcinogenic
can negatively affect male reproductive organs by acting like estrogen
can cause allergic skin reactions
can be proxident on animals: toxic to aquatic life
can cause liver, thyroid,
and kidney problems, affect
lung function, and limit blood
coagulation in rodents on the environment: bioaccumulates, especially in
marine ecosystems

negatively affects much wildlife
and therefore ecosystems alternatives other additives that are safe: ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
potassium, calcium, and sodium ascorbate

study, test, and use BHA along with many, many
