Tessa Zocher History of McDonald's 1940- Dick and Mack McDonald open McDonald's Bar-B-Q restaurant in San Bernardino, California I picked this topic because I wanted to do my project on a restaurant. McDonald's was the restaurant that practically started the fast food industry so I wanted do learn the history about how McDonald's started. 1948- Dick and Mac shut down McDonald's Bar-B-Q restaurant for alterations. In December it reopened as a self-serve drive-in restaurant. The menu was also reduced to nine items: hamburger, cheeseburger, soft drinks, milk, coffee, potato chips, and slices of pie. The 15 cent hamburger was still the staple of the menu. 1949- French fries replace potato chips on the menu. The triple thick milkshake is also added to the menu. 1954- 52 year-old Multimixer salesman Ray Kroc comes to McDonald's to sell the brothers more Multimixers. Ray loved the business. He learns from the brothers that they are looking for a nationwide franchising agent. Ray thought that was a good job to take, but he was determined that his future was going to be in hamburgers. 1955- Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald's restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois on April 15th. The first day sales were $366.12. By 1965 there would be 700 McDonald's around the US. 1956- Ray Kroc hired his future McDonald's chairman, Fred Turner. Turner worked as a counter man for the Des Plaines location. He would soon become the head of McDonald's quality, service, and cleanliness that would continue to this day. 1958- The 100 millionth hamburger is sold! 1959- The 100th location opens in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. 1961- Hamburger University opens in the basement of the Elk Grove Village, Illinois restaurant. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Hamburgerology degree. 1961- The Golden Arches logo inspired by the McDonald's red and white slanted roof replaces "Speedee" as the company logo. 1961- Kroc purchases the interest of the McDonald brothers along with the rights to the McDonald name for 2.7 million dollars 1962- McDonald's in Denver, Colorado becomes the first McDonald's restaurant with indoor seating. 1963- McDonald's 500th restaurant opens in Toledo, Ohio. 1963- Filet-o-Fish was the first national menu item in 1965. It was created by Lou Groen who was McDonald's Cincinnati franchisee. 1965- McDonald's celebrates the 10th anniversary of the restaurant and its first public stock offering for $22.50 per share. 1966- McDonald's makes its first TV commercial with Ronald McDonald in his first national TV commercial. He appears on his flying hamburger. First TV commercial: 1967- First international McDonald's restaurant opens in Canada and Puerto Rico. Today they are opened in 119 countries around the world. 1968- The Big Mac is added to the national menu. 1968- The Hot Apple Pie is added to the national menu. 1968- McDonald's begins to support the Olympic movement. They sent hamburgers to homesick Olympians. 1968- 1,000th restaurant opens in Des Plaines, Illinois. 1971- Hamburglar, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, Captain Crook, and the Big Mac join Ronald in McDonaldland. 1973- The Quarter Pounder and the Quarter Pounder with cheese are both added to the national menu. 1974- The first Ronald McDonald House opens in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 1974- "Twoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettucecheespicklesonionsonasesameseedbun" launches as the advertising jingle for the Big Mac. 1975- The first breakfast item, the Egg McMuffin, is added to the national menu. 1975- The first drive-thru opens in Sierra Vista, Arizona because soldiers from Fort Huachuca were forbidden to get out of their cars in army fatigues. 1978- The 5,000th restaurant opens in Kanagawa, Japan. 1979- Happy Meals are introduced to the national menu featuring a circus wagon theme. 1980- McDonald's celebrates their 25th anniversary! 1980- The 6,000 restaurant in Munich, Germany. 1981- McDonald's opens in Denmark, Spain, and Philippines. 1983- McDonald's is located in 32 countries around the world. 1983- Chicken McNuggets are added into all McDonald's restaurants. 1984- Ray Kroc dies on January 14 Today, McDonald's is the leading global food service retailer. They have more than 34,000 local restaurants which are serving nearly 69 million from 119 countries around the world each day.
