Transcript of Mars
Nov. 18,2013- NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Maven mission launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force. The rocket carrying 5,400-pound's lifted of at 1:28 pm.
Exploration of Mars
If the sun were as tall as a typical door, Earth would be the size of a nickel, and Mars would be about as big as an Asprin tablet.
One day on Mars takes just a little over 24 hours. Mars makes a complete orbit around the sun in 687 Earth days.
Mars has a very small atmosphere.
At this time in planets history, Mars' surface cannot support life as we know it.
Like Earth, Mars experiences seasons due to the tilt of its rotational axis.
Mars could have had life and water on it
Cold temp. & thin atmosphere don't allow liquid on surface
Scientists think mars may have had huge floods
Mars orbit around the sun:
Earths orbit around the sun:
Pbobos & Deimos
Moons are among smallest in solar system
Phobos is larger than Deimos
Made of Carbon-tich rock mixed with ice
Phobos if getting closer to Mars by 1.8m every century
Mars average temperatures:
-125 to 23 degrees Fahrenheit
Mars Mass: 641,693,000,000,000,000,000,000
Earths Mass: 5,972,190,000,000,000,000,000,000

When will people go to Mars:
Currently their aren't any human missions planned to go to Mars, but there are multiple concept missions that will help pave the way for Humans to visit Mars
Mars doesn't have a big enough atmosphere to protect it from the impacts by meteorites, asteroids, and comets ( 100 times thinner than Earths atmosphere)
Since Mars has less gravity than Earth, you would weigh 62% less than you do on Earth
Mars is red due to iron in the soil
The Red Planet
is 95% composed
of carbon dioxide
So far no humans have explored Mars
only machines have.
Most attempts to explore Mars have been
unsuccessful especially in the early years
However here are some successful
(Jan. 04) Twin Exploration Rovers
named Spirit and Opportunity land
on surface of Mars. The mission proved that liquid water used to exist there. Which means that at one point Mars had running water.
(March 06) NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter(MRO) arrived in mars orbit and began recording Martian landscape
(Aug. 2012) The Curiosity Rover lands on Mars. The Rover is bigger and more advanced than Spirit and Opportunity. The Curiosity Rover can actually tell the chemical make of rocks up from 7 meter distances.
The Mars rovers are
designed to study the history
of Mars where conditions may
once have been favorable to life.
Both rovers have far exceeded there
design specifications and returned
science results that have transformed
the understanding of Mars
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
is designed to track changes
in water and dust in Mars
Mars got it's name from Romans -God of War- because of mars red/blood-like color.
Egyptians named it "Her Desher" meaning Red one
Jakosky, Maven principal investigator said
while the launch is a big milestone, Maven
must get to Mars and complete a check-out
period before it can finally begin collecting
Did You Know?
Mars is the fourth farthest planet
from the sun.
