Julie Washer Great Design Start with Great Typography FONT FAMILIES SERIF ALIGNMENT Text needs to be aligned on an imaginary line. TYPOGRAPHY DONT's Please don't stretch type. Fonts take months, even years to make. So please don't change them! GOAL 1 Capture your audience's interest MAKE A STATEMENT Use unique, bold, large fonts to make a statement and draw in your audience DRAW THEM IN Titles should always be substantially larger than the body text and should help draw the audience in to the story TYPOGRAPHY BASICS TYPOGRAPHY HAS TWO GOALS GOAL 2 Help your audience understand information Hierarchy Use typography to guide readers through the levels of your document.

Use different headings by changing font family, font type, font size, font color.

To promote uniformity and help your audiences navigate, keep typographic choices consistent for each subsection throughout the document. Legibility This should ALWAYS be your primary concern.

Younger audiences may be able to read fonts sized at 8 or 9 points. Changing font sizes can also let your audience know what information is most important.

Left-aligned text is most legible, because spacing between words is uniform. It should be used for large bodies of text. Smaller bodies and headlines can be centered or right-aligned. SANS-SERIF This is an example of a serif font. It is more elegant and less modern. It is also easier to read in print than a sans-serif font. This is an example of a sans-serif font. These can be especially good for titles because they hold a lot of weight and can capture attention easily. FONT DON'Ts Don't choose fonts that are too similar. This is confusing. Don't choose fonts that are distracting. Don't use too many fonts at once. They should help us understand, not overwhelm us.
Don't use a font just for font's sake. Have a reason for it. Use fonts, font color, font size to create hierarchy and direct your audience.
