Thanksgiving started a long time ago and is a time in America where everyone gives thanks for what they have.
Pilgrims are a group of people who came to America in search of religious freedom.
When the Pilgrims got to America they were dying of starvation.
They asked the native people, the Wampanog, for help.
The Wampanog taught the Pilgrims how to farm, hunt, and fish.
They grew crops like corn and squash.
When they had stored enough food for the winter they had a feast.
This feast happened in 1621, and is considered
the first Thanksgiving.

Modern History
After the first Thanksgiving people would observe Thanksgiving at different times.
They would have a feast to celebrate winning a battle or having a good harvest.
In 1777, the 13 colonies decided to observe Thanksgiving together to celebrate defeating the British.
Thanksgiving did not become an official American holiday until 1863.
She wrote many letter to then President Lincoln, who thought it would be a good way to bring the nation together.
Sarah Josepha Hale (the first women magazine editor) thought Thanksgiving would be a good way to heal the Nation after the Civil War.
It was in the 1920's that Thanksgiving was placed on the 4th Thursday of November by the United States Congress.
Every year people watch parades on T.V. and have a big dinner.
People Celebrate by getting together with family.
We take this time to remember why we are thankful.
