Transcript of Homesteading

Homesteading is where any person had a chance to get lots of land from the government
These people who got land from the government were called homesteaders
Homesteaders were required to improve the amount of land they owned in the five years they lived there
By the end of the Civil War, 15,000 homestead claims had been established
The last claim ever passed was in Southern Alaska in 1988
Eventually, 1.6 million claims were approved
