THE AREA OF SEABED AROUND A LARGE LANDMASS WHERE THE SEA IS RELATIVELY SHALLOW COMPARED WITH THE OPEN OCEAN.

This is what an ocean zone is.
But what is a continental shift?
The Epipelagic zone is the surface layer of the ocean that extends from the surface to 200 meters (656 feet). It is also known as the sunlight zone because this where most of the visible light exists. This is also where most of life in the ocean exists, and where most of us swim and fish.
There are many layers to the ocean floor but the one where 90% of all ocean life lives is the epipelagic. This layer, the closest one to the sun, is where you will find plant life. This unique layer has the light needed for photosynthesis to take place. Since there is an abundance of sunlight here, this layer is very high in plant life as well as a variety of algae. Here you will find flowering plants and a variety of seaweeds. There are also a lot of fishes living in here that rely on the sun.
The middle layer of the world's oceans receives only faint, filtered sunlight during the daytime. This is because the seawater absorbs the sunlight. This barely-lit ocean layer is called the twilight zone. This zone appears deep blue to black. The twilight zone extends to about 3,300 feet (about 1,000 m). On average, this zone extends from 660 to 3,300 feet (200 to 1,000 m). In the disphotic zone, there is enough light to see during the day, but not enough light for photosynthesis to take place, so no plants live in this zone. The amount of light decreases with depth. Because of this, food is not abundant. The water in the twilight zone is cold (the temperature ranges from 41 to 39 degrees F) and decreases with depth. The pressure is high -- it can be up to 1,470 pounds per square inch and increases with depth. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is less than in the sunlit zone.
The animals living in this zone must survive cold temperatures, increased water pressure, and dark water. Some fish have extra big eyes to help them see, while others produce their own light called bioluminescence using special organs in their bodies called photophores. Many animals in the twilight zone have thin bodies as their camouflage so it is harder for predators to see them. But most fish don’t chase their food, they stalk it. Some have sharp fangs or big mouths to help them catch their food.

This layer, the Bathypelagic zone, or the midnight zone extends from 3,281 to 13,124 feet (1000 to 4000m.) Their name comes from a greek word meaning "no bottom", which means that the temperature is near freezing, and there is no light at all. And at this depth, very few creatures are found here, but the deepest fish ever discovered was located in the Puerto Rico Trench at a depth of 27,460 feet (8,372 m.) Also, three quarters of the ocean are made up of this layer.
The creatures here have adapted to this layer's environment which consists of, seasonal changes, high pressures, darkness, calm water, and soft sediment bottoms. And with all of this combined, the animals here tend to be black or gray, and delicately structured. Even the crustaceans and fish here might be blind. And with increasing depth, the carnivores and scavengers here become less abundant than the animals that feed on mud and suspended matter. Also, abyssal animals are believed to reproduce very slowly.
Creatures living in this layer have a tough life because food is very scarce, and because of that, not many
animals can be found here. And if you did find some, most of them are no bigger than a human hand, and they
have weak, and flabby bodies. Also, instead of chasing their food, they wait in ambush, so they don't waste their energy
catching only little amounts of food. And just like some of the animals in the mesopelagic zone, these fish also have
bioluminescent, and they also tend to be darker in color compared to the fish in the mesopelagic zone.
This layer is the second to the last of the five zones, and this layer is known for its lack of nutrients, high oxygen content, and complete and total darkness. And in spite of these conditons, there is a substantial amount of fish, invertebrates, bacteria and other biota that inhabit this zone. This layer extends from 13,124 to 19,686 feet (4000 to 6000 m.)

Abyssal Cusk Eel
This zone is the deepest, darkest, and most pressured layer in the ocean. It extends from 19,686 feet (6000 m.) to the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean. With conditions like this, you might think there would be no marine life, but in 1960, Jaques Piccard and Don Walsh found life at the deepest trench in the world, the Mariana's Trench. They found some shrimp and flounder-like fish. Even tube worms and starfish are able to thrive in a place like this.
There are many strange things about the fish here. For example, some fish had to reduce their use of eyesight since there was no light but they still have their eyes because they rely on bioluminescence to help them keep it from deteriorating.
