It was designed by Caleb Lownes in 1778. Historical Facts In the early 1600s, Pennsylvania territory was disputed among the Dutch. in 1664, England took over New York, and in 1681, William Penn was a Quaker and granted Pennsylvania. From 1776 to 1800, Philadelphia was seated for the federal governement. In 1776, the Declaration of INdependence and the U.S. Constitution was drawn up in 1787. The Liberty Bell can be found in the Independence Hall in Philadelphia. In 1859, they dug up the nation's first oil well in Titusville, and the development of the state steel industry of mining of iron ore and coal. Pennsylvania's industry has been diversified more recently.
