NeTEx - Network Timetable Exchange
CEN Standard

NeTEx Standard
Why? - Drivers
CEN Process
Open review and voting process
Multi country participation organised through national standards bodies
Attention to existing standards
Lifecycle management to complete and to Review
Different tracks: Technical Specification towards Full Standard
How is NeTEx used?
Data in NeTEx format is encoded as XML documents that must conform exactly to the XSD schema

A NeTEx exchange need only to implement those elements of relevance to its business objectives

Parties using NeTEx typically define a “profile” to identify the elements and the code sets to be used to identify them.

NeTEx Scope
NeTEx Part 1
Scheduled PT data exchange
(Network,Timetables and Fares)
Focuses on objects and information required for passenger information and exchange between transit scheduling systems and AVMS
Based on european standard Transmodel as conceptual model
Compliant enhancement of existing national and rail standards:
TransXChange
in UK,
VDV 452
in Germany,
NEPTUNE
in France, UIC Leaflets, etc.
Communication protocol shared with
SIRI
Standard for
exchanging Public Transport data
among distributed systems
It is designed on the base of UML models compliant with Transmodel standard
Is intended to be a general purpose XML format
Main deliverables:
CEN Specification Documents
UML Models
XML Schema & Examples
Accompanying documents (TR)

Framework
Versions, Version frames
Organisations, Responsibilities, etc.
Day Types, Service calendars
Vehicles, Trains, Accessibility

Public transport Network Topology exchange format
Infrastructure, Infrastructure constraints
Stop places, Points of interest, Parking, Paths, Entrances
Lines, Flexibles lines, Routes, Journey patterns, etc.
Stops, Connections, Timing points, etc.
Garages, Crew points, Beacon points

NeTEx Part 2
Scheduled Timetables exchange format

Journey information: Vehicle journeys, Journey interchanges, Coupled journeys, etc.
Time related data: Passing times (timetabled and dated), Operating days, etc.
Operational times : Run times, Time demand types, etc.
Vehicle services: Blocks
Rail specific issues (Coupled journeys, etc.)
NeTEx Part 3
Fare information
Multimodal fare offer for passenger information
Planned tariff information exchanged between service operators, product owners (i.e. authorities, etc.)
Includes
Different Tariff Structures (Spatial, Time based, Yield managed)
Access rights
Fare pricing parameters

Reducing costs
Shared markets, wide tool base, reusable components
Common specifications for procurement and exchange
Makes data costs viable for new functions

Managing Complexity
Simplified, uniform solutions
Harnesses know-how & best practice

Increasing Capability
Enables Advanced function, especially electronic delivery
Passenger information
Large scale coverage, multimodal
More powerful representations & functions
Interoperability

Passenger rights
Objective, timely information, cross-modal
E.g. EU ITS action plan.
Accessibility

Sustainability / Green
Encourage use of PT service
Make use of PT capacity efficient (ITS)

Interoperability
Free flow of data and system use between regions
STIF, Paris PT Authority, has selected NeTEx and is currently migrating its information systems (and they have also selected SIRI)
France has poduced national profiles for NeTEx
ERA (European Rail Agency) was deeply involved in NeTEx and plan to use it for Network, Timetable and Fare description
It is expected that most European countries will now migrate from nation standards to NeTEx
As for DATEX II (adopted by EU Commission for Real-time traffic), NeTEx may become mandatory in Europe ...
Current and planned
usage of NeTEx
For more information ...
NeTEx is managed by CEN/TC278/WG3 SG9 (
EPTIS team
), a comittee of public transport experts from different European countries.

Business Drivers
Political Drivers
There is an overall need to overtake limitations of existing national standardsands having a
unique european wide standard
for PT data exchange
Netex XSD
The XSD mainly defines :
the XML tag structure and names,
the required types (simple or complex) for elements,
cardinality and relations
reflect the UML, Transmodel based UML schema, applying some XML implementation design rules,
apply contraints to check the consistency of the XML document

The XSD defines the main body of the exchange, but also service access (Web Service) that user my decide to use
SIRI based web service
Possible usage of SIRI Lite (REST) option
Available WSDL (RPC, Document and WSDL2) for SOAP users
And of course regular file exchange with FTP, HTTP, etc.

Users can use the XSD and WSDL to generate code (Java, C++, PHP, Ruby, C#, etc.) that will ease development
Reading and writing NeTEx XSD
Check validity against the schema and its consistency constraints
Questions and Answers
What about Google GTFS ?
Where can I get information about NeTEx ?
Who should I contact if I need support
or if I find an error or inconsistency ?
How can I add something to the standard (eg new object, new attributes) ?
Who is funding the development of these standards ?
Others Q&A
Feel free to ask now !

A lot of Q&A are available on
http://netex-cen.eu/?page_id=111
NeTEx UML model includes a GTFS mapping (and mapping with most national standards like VDV, NEPTUNE, UIC Leaflets, ..)

Every GTFS file can be converted to NeTEx

But NeTEx can tell much, much, much... more than GTFS (planning and AVMS needs, stop description, detailed passing times, flexible transport, organisation and roles, etc. etc.)

But GTFS is still very good for a lot of Open Data needs ...
http://netex-cen.eu ... and there's a contact mail
There is also an "implementations" section where you will be able to identify other users to contact

Your local standardization body

NeTEx TC278/WG3/SG9 members can also be contacted

Possible future organization to maintain XSD, provide tools (conversion, validation, etc.), assist users, connect users together
Still http://netex-cen.eu ...

Possible future organization ....

As for SIRI there will probably be additional support groups (i.e. Google group) where SG9 members will answer/help/fix ...
If it is a local specific need, NeTEx provides several extension mechanisms
Generic Key/Value mechanism is suitable for most needs
There is also a generic "extensions" tag, containing XSD "</xsd:any>" to allow the addition of more complex extensions
All this without breaking interoperability !

If your extension need is widely reusable
Please contact SG9 or WG3 !
May be done directly, though the web site or through your national standardization body
We can create new work item when there are some shared needs
We can also anticipate the EN or TS renewal if necessary
Contributing members have a set of very different funding situations
funded by their own companies/organisation
nationaly funded as representative expert sent to CEN
funded by PTAs interested in the work

But there are also some more global funding
ERA (European Rail Agency) has funded some work to ensure UIC leaflet compatibility (through a call for tender)
EPTIS is an EU funded action that has selected 4 experts (through a call for tender) to work on Part 3 and accompanying documents
