How is NeTEx used?
Data in NeTEx format is encoded as XML documents that must conform exactly to the XSD schema

A NeTEx exchange need only to implement those elements of relevance to its business objectives

Parties using NeTEx typically define a “profile” to identify the elements and the code sets to be used to identify them.

STIF, Paris PT Authority, has selected NeTEx and is currently migrating its information systems (and they have also selected SIRI)
France has poduced national profiles for NeTEx
ERA (European Rail Agency) was deeply involved in NeTEx and plan to use it for Network, Timetable and Fare description
It is expected that most European countries will now migrate from nation standards to NeTEx
As for DATEX II (adopted by EU Commission for Real-time traffic), NeTEx may become mandatory in Europe ...

There is an overall need to overtake limitations of existing national standardsands having a
unique european wide standard
for PT data exchange
Netex XSD
The XSD mainly defines :
the XML tag structure and names,
the required types (simple or complex) for elements,
cardinality and relations
reflect the UML, Transmodel based UML schema, applying some XML implementation design rules,
apply contraints to check the consistency of the XML document

The XSD defines the main body of the exchange, but also service access (Web Service) that user my decide to use
SIRI based web service
Possible usage of SIRI Lite (REST) option
Available WSDL (RPC, Document and WSDL2) for SOAP users
And of course regular file exchange with FTP, HTTP, etc.

Users can use the XSD and WSDL to generate code (Java, C++, PHP, Ruby, C#, etc.) that will ease development
Reading and writing NeTEx XSD
Check validity against the schema and its consistency constraints

A lot of Q&A are available on
NeTEx UML model includes a GTFS mapping (and mapping with most national standards like VDV, NEPTUNE, UIC Leaflets, ..)

Every GTFS file can be converted to NeTEx

But NeTEx can tell much, much, much... more than GTFS (planning and AVMS needs, stop description, detailed passing times, flexible transport, organisation and roles, etc. etc.)

But GTFS is still very good for a lot of Open Data needs ...

As for SIRI there will probably be additional support groups (i.e. Google group) where SG9 members will answer/help/fix ...
If it is a local specific need, NeTEx provides several extension mechanisms
Generic Key/Value mechanism is suitable for most needs
There is also a generic "extensions" tag, containing XSD "</xsd:any>" to allow the addition of more complex extensions
All this without breaking interoperability !

Please contact SG9 or WG3 !
May be done directly, though the web site or through your national standardization body
We can create new work item when there are some shared needs
We can also anticipate the EN or TS renewal if necessary
Contributing members have a set of very different funding situations
funded by their own companies/organisation
nationaly funded as representative expert sent to CEN
funded by PTAs interested in the work

But there are also some more global funding
ERA (European Rail Agency) has funded some work to ensure UIC leaflet compatibility (through a call for tender)
EPTIS is an EU funded action that has selected 4 experts (through a call for tender) to work on Part 3 and accompanying documents
