THE SOUND WAS HIS UNDOING. HE STEPPED TOWARDS IT EXPECTANTLY.SUDDENLY,HIS RIGHT FOOT WENT DOWN.ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE KNEE THROUGH THE EARTH"(FINDLEY 77). "EARTH SYMBOLIZES PRACTICALITY,RESTRAINT AND MATERIALISM.IT IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH THE PHYSICAL,SENSUAL ASPECTS OF LIFE" "HIS EYES WOULDN'T CLOSE BECAUSE HIS LIDS WERE CAKED WITH WHAT AMOUNTED TO PASTE.HIS MOUTH AND HIS NOSTRILS WERE CLOGGED WITH EARTH. BLOOD RAN DOWN THE BACK OF HIS THROAT BECAUSE IT COULDN'T ESCAPE THROUGH HIS NOSE"(FINDLEY 109). "AIR IS OFTEN SEEN AS A UNIVERSAL POWER OR PURE SUBSTANCE. "ALL AT ONCE - A BIRD SANG OVER THEIR HEADS.SOMEONE SWORE,AS IF THE BIRD HAD GIVEN THEM AWAY.ROBERT GAZED UPWARD.THE SKY BEYOND THE CRATER'S RIM WAS PATCHED WITH BLUE"(FINDLEY 122) "IN CHRISTIAN FAITH,THE NUMBER THREE REPRESENTS THE TRINITY; THE FATHER, SON AND HOLY SPIRIT" "THE MAN BEING RIDDEN WAS TAFFLER.THE RIDER WAS SWEDE.GOLIATH"(FINDLEY 41) "THE HORSE WAS A FINE BLACK MARE,STANDING ABOUT SIXTEEN HANDS.SHE HAD BEEN WELL CARED FOR UP TILL NOW AND SOMEONE HAD OBVIOUSLY RIDDEN HER EVERY DAY"(FINDLEY 188). MYSTERY, DEATH, A SECRET OR A MESSENGER OF GREAT KNOWLEDGE.
