An Introduction to US History:
1607-1877
This year, we will be studying US History from its origins to Reconstruction (1877).
America is at first the land itself—
wild and waiting to be explored.
But, who are Americans?
When we are learning about US History, whose history are we referring to?
We know the story of the Native Americans, and how they got here:
Sometime between 20,000-40,000 years ago,
Paleolithic tribes crossed the Bering land
bridge while hunting wild herds
.
They continued to migrate across this continent and gradually evolved into several unique tribal nations.
Sadly, the curriculum of this course does not significantly focus on the vast history and culture of America's native tribes.
Later, in approximately 985CE, Bjarni Herjólfsson, a Norse merchant was said to have spotted America’s shores from Greenland.
Shortly after this, the more famous Leif Ericson is said to have built a small colony in Newfoundland that would eventually fail.
It wasn’t until Columbus’ voyage in 1492 that Europeans were made aware of this “New World”-- although Columbus never came onto the American mainland.
Columbus and other explorers' exploits ignited competition between Europe’s empires for the plunder of the New World’s resources.
The reasons Europeans came to the New World:
Gold (yes the yellow stuff, but also land, slaves, and wealth)
God (Spanish= use Catholicism to grow Empire
English= use New World as a base for new religious values)
Glory (explorers wished for fame, which could earn them titles and perks in their mother countries. It also gave European nations the chance to expand their empires)
But our story of US History truly begins in the year 1607…
Jamestown became the first successful English colony in America.
This year, we will learn about the History, People, and Events that shaped The United States of America from its Colonial Origins to the aftermath of the devastating Civil War.
1. Colonial Era (1607-1775)
2.Revolution (1775-1783)
3. Creating a New Nation
(1783-1801)
4. Early Republic (1801-1829)
5. Age of Jackson (1829-1837)
6. Westward Expansion
(1837-1850)
7. Industrialization and Reform
(dates varied)
8. Sectionalism and Division
(1850-1860)
9. Civil War (1861-1865)
10. Reconstruction (1865-1877)
There are 10 Units (Eras) that we will cover in this class. (all dates are approximate)
This course will cover a lot of material, so it is crucial that you take good notes, and maintain an Interactive Notebook (iNB).

The quality of your notes and vocabulary will make or break you.
Our textbook is entitled “United States History- Early Colonial Period through Reconstruction ” and will be the old-school way of acquiring information when appropriate.
We will also investigate primary sources to learn about history from the actual people who participated in it.
Goals for this year:
We will all respect each other and create a collaborative environment of learning
We will strive to be curious and engaged to build the habit of life-long learning
We will challenge ourselves to better understand our world and our places in it
We will have fun doing all of these things
Grading Policy:
45% of your grade will be SUMMATIVE (unit exams, vocabulary quizzes)

30% of your grade will be FORMATIVE (projects, activities, and spiral checks).

25% of your grade will consist of daily work/homework.
Things to know about me:

I use sarcasm. I have a dry sense of humor. If I ever unintentionally confuse or offend you, please let me know. (Although this doesn’t happen often.)
I aim to keep it real. My lessons and activities should always be relevant.
I will always respect my students, but I expect the same in return. I have little patience for unkind or rude behavior.
Feel free to challenge and question the content of this course. I strongly encourage critical thinking and love a healthy debate.

This course will not discuss the impact of Vikings.
We will not discuss Columbus in this course.
This led to the eventual establishment of the 13 Colonies that would eventually become the United States of America.
(it takes self-discipline and mindfulness to be active and present in class. do not distract your neighbors, and speak up when others are distracting you)
