Forrest and Jenny both attend different colleges and Forrest does not want to let her go
Step 5: Committing to Change
Forrest accepts that Bubba died in the Vietnam War
He has to commit to rehab because he was shot while saving Bubba
Forrest commits to the journey to preserve Bubba's memory
Step 8: Big Change with feeling of life and death
Forrest's major change is that he has to live without his mom and mentor

Forrest's mom takes him to the doctor
He gets leg braces
Mrs. Gump tells Forrest how he is no different than the other kids and that he is special
Mrs. Gump tries to enroll Forrest in public school, however Principal Hancock tells her the Forrest is different and his IQ is too low
Forrest doesn't have anyone to sit with on the bus because the kids view him as different
School boys begin to chase/ harass Forrest because he is dumb
He visits her at school on multiple occasions
Throughout their childhood, Jenny was Forrest's only friend and they were inseparable
Forrest decides that after he graduates, he is going to join the army
He overcomes the fear of leaving Jenny and his mom behind
By joining the army, Forrest overcomes his fear of death
He overcomes the fear of being dumb and different because he is the smartest person in his platoon
Forrest is discharged from the army, and moves back home to care for his ill mom
He has to give up Ping Pong and leave behind his friend, Lieutenant Dan
While in rehab, Forrest starts playing Ping Pong, and ends up becoming a celebrity
He learns what it feels like to be good at something
Forrest is experimenting with his new shrimp company, Bubba Gump Shrimp
Jenny comes to visit Forrest soon after his mothers death, she stays with him for a while in Greensboro and when she leaves, Forrest becomes extremely distraught
After Jenny leaves Alabama, Forrest decides on that same day that he would run
Forrest runs across the state of Alabama and from there continues on to cross the country multiple times (3 years in total)
The way Forrest coped with Jenny's leaving was by running, because that made him feel peaceful

Forrest receives a letter from Jenny asking him to come visit her in Savannah
He comes to find out that he and Jenny have a son together and the two of them come to live with Forrest in Alabama
Jenny tells Forrest that she is ill and dying, so Forrest marries Jenny before she passes away
Jenny's illness gets worse and she ends up dying in Alabama
Forrest buries Jenny under the tree they used to climb when they were young
He goes to Jenny's grave to tell her how much he loves and misses her, therefore having to cope with the fact that she died
In the final scene, Forrest sends his son off to school
Forrest realizes that his son is smart when he asks him to read "Curious George"
