Physical Geography of Latin America Why "Latin" America? Because it is the region of the Americas where "romance" languages are spoken What is a "romance" language? Any language derived from Latin! Romance Languages:
Romanian Major regions of Latin America Central America North America & Meso-America Caribbean South America Physical Features: Mountains have served as barriers across the region, isolating populations and cultures
Sierra Madre Occidental Sierra Madre Oriental Occident = West Oriental = East Andes Many of the Mountains are dormant or active volcanoes Large bodies of water have also inhibited cultural communication Caribbean 7000 Islands Volcanic and Coral Gulf of California Gulf of Mexico River Systems are defining features of South America Orinoco Amazon The Amazon is the second longest in the world It is also the largest in the world by volume of water In addition to the Mountains, Highlands break the landscape Guiana Highlands Brazillian Highlands Mato Grosso
Plateau There is also a plains and grasslands region, the Pampas Unique landforms and regions round out the physical features Isthmus of Panama Patagonia Lake Titicaca Angel Falls Atacama Desert Galapagos Islands The Panama Canal opened in 1914 allowing a shortcut for ocean traffic from Atlantic to Pacific Patagonia contains some of the world's most unique landforms in a small region. It is a very popular location for extreme sports and outdoor enthusiasts The world's highest great lake suitable for boat traffic Lake Titicaca has 40 islands inside it The world's highest waterfall High altitude desert, the Atacama gets less than 1/2 inch of precipitation a year This small isolated island group (part of Ecuador) contains a huge number of species found nowhere else in the world Climate The variety of landforms means a wide variety of climates High latitudes exhibit highland climate Amazon and Orinoco are Tropical Wet climates The Pampas is Semi-Arid to Arid The Atacama is extremely Arid Along the coasts of Mexico is Tropical Dry climate Central Mexico is Humid Sub-Tropical The Caribbean is Tropical Wet & Dry T THE
