Groove is the overall framework in which rhythmic things happen
Tempo is the speed of a piece of music
Rhythm is the separation of sounds and silences
What is Rhythm????
Sounds and silences are put together to form a pattern of repeated sounds.
Rhythm has a pulse or steady beat.
Beat is a regular, recurrent pulsation that divides music into equal units of time.
Beats can be stronger or longer or shorter or less emphasized.

Meter is the feel of a piece
Meter organizes the pulses and rhythm
Most Jazz is in a common meter and is in groups of fours
What is Syncopation????
Backbeat = 1
Four Beat Pulse + Backbeat= GROOVE
What is Groove???
The main groove in jazz is Swing
What is swing?
Short rhythmic or melodic phrase that is repeated through a piece
