social justice in quadragesimo anno
written during the Industrial Revolution and Political Change
Quadragesimo Anno
written by the end of the Industrial Revolution and by the onset of the Great Depression.
That justice called commutative commands sacred respect for the division of possessions and forbids invasion of others' rights through the exceeding of the limits of one's own property; but the duty of owners to use their property only in a right way does not come under this type of justice, but under other virtues, obligations of which "cannot be enforced by legal action.
invading one's property is different from...
how the property is used
Summary
PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Pope Pius XIII was the
260th pope
in the Roman Catholic Church after the World War I.
POPE PIUS XI
the condition of labor in the social and economic doctrine

many workers labor and affirms workers’ rights to just wages, rest, and fair treatment, to form unions, and to strike if necessary. Pope Leo XIII upholds individuals’ right to hold private property but also notes the role of the state in facilitating distributive justice so that workers can adequately support their families and someday own property
of their own. He notes the poor “have a claim to special consideration”
abuses of capitalism and socialism

capitalism has its tendency toward greed, concentration of wealth, and mistreatment of workers. socialism is a rejection of private property and an under‐emphasis on the dignity of each individual person

Quadragesimo Anno
The Quadragesimo Anno (Latin word for “
In the 40th year
”) was written in the 1930s, forty years after Pope Leo XIII completed his Rerum Novarum on the condition of workers. In writing the Quadragesimo Anno, Pope Pius XI
aimed to address social issues particularly the ethical challenges workers or employees, employers, the state and the Church experience which resulted from the end of the industrial revolution and the beginning of the Great Depression.

SOCIAL JUSTICE
human society was clearly becoming divided more and more into two classes.

One class, very small in number, was enjoying almost all the advantages which modern inventions so abundantly provided;

the other, embracing the huge multitude of working people, oppressed by wretched poverty, was vainly seeking escape from the straits wherein it stood.

He was born on
May 31, 1857
in Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, Italy and died on
February 10, 1939
.
In the political face, one of his famous development was when he signed the
Lateran Treaty
on February 11, 1929.
What is Lateran Treaty?
An agreement between the Republic of Italy and the Holy See(Vatican). As a result,Vatican and the Kingdom of Italy were then recognized as independent states.
as introduced in
Rerum Novarum
Result of the rapid industrialization
The concentration of wealth has led to a situation where only the strongest and those who disregard their conscience prospered in the new economic reality.
Rerum Novarum
The Great Famine in Russia
Financial collapse in Germany
the stock market crash
world-wide economic depression
Rerum Novarum had begun a robust discussion of the rights and duties of workers and employers in society. Since 1891 the number of workers associations had grown, but did not flourish to the degree necessary to correct injustices against workers.
As Pope Leo XIII did in Rerum Novarum, Pope Pius XI emphasizes the role that associations of workers can play in order to help address these injustices.
"every man has by nature the right to possess property as his own."
"the impelling reason and motive of his work is to obtain property."
Instead of helping the working class, the elimination of private property would only hurt those it was intended to benefit.
affirms the Right to property
on ownership and right to property:
On Ownership and right to Property:
here, there is a distinct difference between the right to property and its use. While economics and moral values may often seem unrelated, God created economic activity for humanity - not humans to serve the economy. Moral law ought to guide activities in the economic sphere as it does elsewhere. The tendencies to become either individualistic or collectivist (socialist) ought to be avoided.
In economics people should not only consider their own interests, but also the common good. The state also must seek to work towards the common good. Both the state and its inhabitants should work towards ending strife between classes. The state should not "exhaust private wealth" through taxes, but instead provide a "friendly service" when it works for the common good.
A county's wealth comes from the very labor of its people. Individuals should use their wealth to benefit the common good and to help those less fortunate. Labor is worth as much as the products that result, and a worker ought to be paid enough to support himself and his family. Yet it is important to note that one's income beyond what is necessary for living frugally and with dignity ought to be used, as commanded by the scriptures, to help those who are less fortunate.
individual
communal
"It follows from what We have termed the individual and at the same time social character of ownership, that men must consider in this matter not only their own advantage but also the common good. To define these duties in detail when necessity requires and the natural law has not done so, is the function of those in charge of the State."
on subsidiary:
Pope Pius XI first articulated the idea of subsidiary in Quadragesimo Anno. The principle states that functions of government ought to remain at the smallest or most local level as possible, and that the government shouldn't complete tasks that can be best accomplished by individuals. If local governments can perform functions just as effectively as on the national level, these tasks ought to remain at the local level.
the riches that economic-social developments constantly increase ought to be so distributed among individual persons and classes that the common advantage of all, which Leo XIII had praised, will be safeguarded; in other words, that the common good of all society will be kept inviolate. By this law of social justice, one class is forbidden to exclude the other from sharing in the benefits.
for the common good
