2013 - not only Poland! Some of Our Partners:
The idea of organizing Bicycool Library came up in 2009 in the head of a librarian from Lodz (central Poland) - Paulina Milewska - who rides a bike every day. When she realized that not only her but also 5 of her co-workers get to the library by bike, she decided to do something about it. The 7th Libraries' Week (Poland, May 2010) was an ideal occasion to organize this extraordinary event.
Thanks to the support of The Fenomen Foundation (bicyclists' organization) and librarians from non-public academic libraries the first bicycle ride Bicycool Library started in Lodz, near the Library of The Pedagogical Academy, on the Librarian's Day (8th May 2010). More than 90 people rode then 10 km and had fun. It was a really huge step for librarianship in Lodz.
Many people were impressed with the event and that is why in 2011 the ride became more popular. Bicycool Library occurred in 19 locations of Poland. The year 2012 was even bigger success. The events were organized in 97 towns and villages and had 3345 participants in the whole country!
Nowadays you can hear about Bicycool Library during conferences, congresses and other events for librarians. There is more and more people who want to organize such a ride in their towns next year. The ride is said to be a practice that is worth to follow and it is one of the most popular events for librarians in Poland.
Why not?

Bike + librarian = unconventional combination

This unconventional combination causes curiosity, astonishment, catches everybody's attention and elicits various reactions, especially... wide smiles :-D
And that's the point - it should be nice, pleasurable, favorably. A bike is a thing that almost everyone possesses, that is connected with relax, fun and childhood. Librarians on bicycles are active, happy and you can even say trendy (it is trendy to ride a bike and to be eco). And that's the way to fight with stereotypes! Why bikes? Short story Unfortunately, working as a librarian is thought to be dull, not very demanding, stressless. A typical female-librarian is a not attractive middle-aged woman, with a bun on her head, wearing an ugly sweater, unkind and unqualified. When a librarian rides a bike, he wants to show how misleading the stereotype is. We want to prove that we are active, cheerful, colorful and just COOL. Fighting with stereotype Integration and fun Local communities, that cooperate with libraries, have the opportunity to play together and integrate during the rides and other activities connected with it. The event is for everyone, so you can meet there people of any age, interested in books, bicycles and other things.
Bicycool Library also integrates librarians, who don't cooperate very often. So every librarian who attend the ride is a part of a huge librarians' family :-) Bicycool Library is the answer for the stereotype. It is also the way to promote some positive ideas. We want to encourage people to read books and use the ecologic and economic mean of transport.
Promoting reading and libraries - bookcrossing, showing the places connected with books (we usually ride near bookshops, libraries or museums), organizing literature competitions or meetings with authors.
Promoting bikes - we want to prove that a bike can be a very effective mean of transport for everyone. We want to promote healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Promoting reading, libraries and bibycles Connecting two different things - a bicycle and a librarian brings surprisingly positive effects. We've achieved:
• pedestrians waving to us,
• cheerful readers, who had active and cultural fun with us,
• fans of any age,
• librarians proud of their profession,
• bicyclists supporting librarians' ride,
• cheerful activists, local clerks and even municipal policemen,
• media's attention.
It is obvious that Bicycool Library connects people, makes them better ones. It changes librarians and, what is very important, changes public reception of our profession, libraries generally and reading. As you can see - everything may be or rather everything is... COOL!
