#### Transcript of Adding and Subtracting Real Numbers

Real Numbers

To add any real numbers using number line:
ALWAYS move to the RIGHT when adding a POSITIVE number
ALWAYS move to the LEFT when adding a NEGATIVE number
Adding a POSITIVE number to any other Real Number:
-3 + 6 = 3 ALWAYS move RIGHT
-3 -2 -1 1 2 3
0
-3
+6
Adding a NEGATIVE number to any other Real Number:
7 + (-9) = -2 ALWAYS move LEFT
-2 -1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
0
+7
-9
To Subtract a Real Number from another Real Number, simply add the number's opposite (or it's "additive inverse"):

-11 - 6 becomes -11 + (-6)

We can then use a number line if necessary to find the sum...in this case, -11 + (-6) = -17
*Remember: if two numbers are opposites, their sum is 0.
Absolute Value is a Real Numbers' Distance from 0.
*Note that since Absolute Value is Distance,
it can NEVER be negative:
|5| = 5 |-7| = 7
Does 0 have an Absolute Value?
If so, what is it?
Practice:
1.) -4 +7
2.) -3.5 - 5
3.) 91 + (-11)
4.) 23 - 36
5.) 15.6 + x, for x = -17.9
Solutions:
= 3
= -8.5
= 80
= -13
15.6 + (-17.9) = -2.3
