The Hate List
About the Author
Award winning columnist, Hate List is her debut novel. 2009
She has three other books called Perfect escape, Bitter End and Thousand Words
She lives in Kansas City with her husband and three children
She won the Erma Brombeck Global Humor Award (2005 & 2006)
She did a weekly column in The Kansas City Star for over 4 years
'Beauty & the Beast' in the book
The Hate List shows beauty and the best through multiple characters. Valerie shows beauty and the beast because she was the one to start the hate list but when Nick opened fire on the school she saved a girl who used to bully her. Jessica shows beauty and the beast because she used to bully Valerie every day, but then when Valerie saved her she wanted to be her friend. Nick shows beauty and the beast because even though he was the one to kill and injure so many people Valerie always says how he was a good guy. She believes he was only trying to help her by killing the people that were bullying her.

Anyone who likes to read books that can easily relate to the real world. (Ex. Bullying)
My least favourite part of the book was ending. I didn’t like how the author left it open. She said that she wants the reader to finish Valerie’s story but I’d rather have a real finished ending.

My favourite part of the book is at graduation when Valerie and Jessica gave a memorial to all the victims in the shooting. I liked how after everything Valerie went through she could finally say how she felt about her place in the shooting and tell everyone the truth.

Best and least favourite parts
This story relates to real life situations because people get bullied all the time, bullying is everywhere. All schools have bullying: primary schools, high schools and even in the work place. It is very common to watch the news and see another story about a teenager committing suicide because of bullying. Some cases of bullying goes extreme and the victim either tries to kill themselves or kill the person who bullied them to get the bullying to stop. This usually happens when the bullied person reaches a point of desperation. Nick was so depressed from being bullied so much he couldn't take it anymore so he shot all the people that bullied him. He also hated seeing the girl he loved being bullied so he thought that he was doing the right thing by killing these people for Valerie.

How many of you know someone who has been bullied?

What do you think people get the most bullied for?
Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on the school cafeteria. Val was shocked as everyone else-but, dispite her own serious injury, she's a suspect in the crime because of the list. The list she and Nick made of people they hated. The list Nick used to pick his targets. Now that summer is over Valerie has to go back to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky realtionships with her family, former friends, and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tradgedy that took place, her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.
