Lets talk about the past of "be"
The verb "be" has two forms in the past tense:
Was
Were
Remember we can use
Present continuous
to talk about
plans
or
events
in the
future,
specially arrangements.
You can use
ING
to
talk about
future events

Don't confuse
I was eating (singular)
We were eating (plural)

The first example is using
WAS
in a singular sense, and the second is using
WERE
in a plural sense.

When asking a question you change the position of the verb like so:
To make a negative add "not"
I was not at work yesterday
He wasn't at work yesterday
We were not at the restaurant
They weren't at the restaurant
