Children With Special Needs
"When I look at my son, I don't see a mentally retarded boy. I see a happy, active 3 year old who like fire trucks, hates to get his hair washed, and has a condition that limits him in certain ways. But don't we all to some extent?"
"Raising a child with special needs is a lot like raising any other child. You get hugs and kisses and spilled glasses of milk. You deal with the special need as part of the child. And every time we overcome a problem, the rewards are sweet."

Parents want their children to live satisfying, productive lives. It is so much harder for the child to do so with a special need.

What does Special Needs Look like?
How can one think it is reasonable to make such broad generalizations about so many people?
OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder)
ADD (Attention Deficit Disorders)
ADHD (Attention Deficit hyperactivity disorder)
ODD (Oppositional defiant disorder)
Cognitive disorders are a category of mental health disorders that primarily affect learning, memory, perception and problem solving.
LD (learning disabled)
meaning it happened in the womb or near birth
FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder)
fragile X syndrome
epilepsy (can be genetic or a symptom of another health concern like ABI (acquired brain injury) or stroke to toxic ingestion)

Teachers and EA's
Don't assume that having a special needs child is the end of the world. Often times, these kids open the eyes of their world to the beauty of different.
You may grieve. You may be angry, in denial, and scared to death. That is fine. You need time to process the fact that your life is forever changed.
- Body's over reaction to a triggering substance. Your immune system mistakes the allergen as a threat and takes defense. (Sneezing, watering eyes, vomiting, hives, etc.)
-Muscles around wind pipe tighten, lining becomes inflamed and congested. Caused from exercise, stress and change in weather or chemical triggers.
- when the body fails to produce insulin or the body becomes insulin resistant. This damages the eyes, kidneys and nervous system.
-mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. It creates on going lung infections causing the loss of lung function and eventually death. Also causes vitamin deficiency.
-Caused from having a third copy of chromosome 21. It is a group of symptoms, usually physical and intellectual, that characterize a certain condition. Children with down syndrome are usually cheerful and affectionate. They have higher risk of heart concers contributing to short
- The brain "short cuts" causing it to send an unusual electronic charge through the nervous system. Creates seizures and brief loss of awareness to the entire body.
- One effected with autism tends to "live in their own world". They are unable to communicate or respond to many stimulation. The cause is a mystery.
-Have difficulty processing information, especially math and language. The disability goes undetected until a child begins school.
- It is caused by the brain before, during or after birth. People with Cerebral palsy have poor muscle tone and some have mental impairments. Many need wheel chairs, crutches or braces.
People with physical special needs may need medicine or specific equipment to help them go about their daily activities.
Parenting a child with special needs is more than meeting intellectual and physical needs.
-Act early and quickly
-Get you child tested as soon as possible
- Convey a spirit of optimism and reassurance
-look into community resources
-don't offer false hope or hold unrealistic expectations
-don't exaggerate the physical and emotional dangers to save your child from failure
- (1) explain the condition using words the child will understand. have faith in your child's ability to cope and come to terms with their condition.
- (2) choose clothing that emphasizes self care
- (3) give the child a chance to do things on their own
- Set limits for behavior according the child's behavior
- recognize and acknowledge achievements
-point out child's unique qualities
-encourage your child to enjoy life
-"My sister gets all the attention"
-"Once I had a really bad stomach ache, but mom just said "Oh, you'll be better tomorrow""
Have you ever been sick the night of a big party? Not understood a lesson the rest of the class did? Not make the team you tried out for? Felt different? Left out? Inferior?

Does it take a special parent to raise a child with special needs?
"Why does she get to do grade 2 math when we are both in grade 3? I wish I could do grade 2 math!"
"He never has to do his work in class. why can I never work in the hall?"
"How come he can throw a chair and doesn't get in trouble?"
-intolerant, very quick to judge
-unaware and unknowing of what children with special needs go through
-"Walk a mile in their shoes before making any decisions"
-scared of what is different and unknown
- It is hard on teachers to have students with special needs. It takes more focus and dedication to teach a child with special needs, taking away from the rest of the class.
- EA's are there to support the child with special needs in every aspect.
A genetic disorder is an illness caused by one or more abnormalities if the genes. They may or may not be inherited.
A mental or behavioral pattern that causes distress or disability. Defined by a combination of how a person feels, acts, thinks or perceives.
Every person has quirks. Every body has something.
Referring to a child as "normal" is unacceptable. Who's standard of normal are we comparing them to? A more accurate term is neural typical. Meaning making a comparison of people of the same age and developmental levels.
