Transcript of Immutability
I know nothing which can so comfort the soul; so calm the swelling billows of grief and sorrow; so speak peace to the winds of trial, as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead.
The unchanging nature of God
In His attributes, character, nature, promises, threatening, essence, etc.
Unchanging in His nature
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Unchanging in His character
“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”
Unchanging in His plans
In His general plans:
Isaiah 14:24 “The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand”
In His relation to individuals:
Job 23:13-14 “13 But he is unchangeable, and who can turn him back? What he desires, that he does. 14 For he will complete what he appoints for me, and many such things are in his mind.”
In His relation to the redeemed:
Hebrews 6:17-18 “17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us”
Doesn't the Bible say God repents?
1 Samuel 15
vs. 11a "It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king . . ."
vs. 29 “And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.”
Immutability and Prayer
"What comfort would it be to pray to a god that, like the chameleon, changed color every moment? Who would put up a petition to an earthly prince that was so mutable as to grant a petition one day, and deny it another?" - Stephen Charnock
1 John 5:14-15
"14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him."
