Water Metering Technologies for
Small Systems

Plan Forward Solutions
Fixed Base Network not practical for our rural system.
In 2013 - Satellite will work but too costly to deploy and keep rates affordable.
Late 2013 - Technologies thought cost effective were (1) Cell or (2) WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider).
AMR - Automatic Meter Reading
AMI - Advanced Meter Infrastructure
Self-Read by Customer - Customer reads the meter/remote device and readings are manually entered into billing software.
Self-Read by Utility - Utility personnel manually read meter and manually entered into billing software.
AMR/AMI end point - Read wirelessly by hand held device, mobile (drive-by vehicle), fixed based, or satellite networks. All ways collect data and readings are downloaded to billing software.
Meter Reading Problem
Driving 4,000 miles per month!
Costs increasing - $0.77 cents per meter/month.

We first put our AMR/AMI end points on meters of our Board of Directors and key personnel.
The Board President had a leak of 5 gal per hour and didn't know it.
The Board was sold then had to develop Cap Ex budget.

Verify meter accuracy - calibrate a sample size.
