tHE OLYMPIC GAMES
HOPE YOU ENJOY!!!
THE Olympic gAMES
The first written records were
written by a cook called Coroebus
Pankration 648 BC
Boxing 688 BC
Chariot racing 680 BC
Pentathlon 780 BC
The Pentathlon: it includes Running, Jumping, Discus Throw, Javelin Throw and Wrestling.
Running Races
: the Stade, the Diaulos and
the Dolichos.
Jumping:
they used stone or lead weights called Halteres to increase the distance of
the jump.
Wrestling:
this was a very useful sport for military services. It ended only when the athlete admitted defeat.
Discus Throw:
the discus were usually made out of stone, bronze or iron.
Boxing:
boxers wrapped straps
called himantes around their
hands to strengthen their wrists
and steady their fingers.
Equestrian Events:
they included Horse Races and Chariot
Races in a wide flat open space called the Hippodrome
Athletes Training
Athletics were the key part of education in Ancient Greece.
The Palestra (Wrestling School) was very popular.
Small fact
According to an inscription the weghtlifter Bubon held a stone of 143kg
above his head and threw it away.
Athletic Trainers used long sticks to point out incorrect things.
Boxers
did Shadowboxng or punched a punching bag .
Pankrastists
used a heavier punching bag, which they aso kicked with their feet.
Wrestlers
looked for a sparring-partners in the gymnasia.
An Athlete trained with a trainer from the time he was a child.
The three types of trainers were the Paidotribes (physical trainers), the gymnastes (exercise trainers) and the aleiptes (muscle massages).
All of these services were expensive.
If the athlete could not afford to pay, the city would pay.
