RECYCLING
We litter everyday...
BUT WHERE DOES OUR TRASH GO???
Landfills...
what's wrong with landfills???
MONEY!!
the cost to keep such complex systems running are high
who pays for it??? WE DO!!!!
even after a landfill is closed, we still need to monitor and repair it.
SYSTEM FAILURE!!
CARBON EMISSION!!!
each heavy machinery used to run the landfill, uses up fossil fuels..
the landfill itself, emits gases such as carbon dioxide and methane.
any runoff water has to be treated. think of the amount of energy that it takes??!!!
landfill legacy
things decompose VERY slowly
newspapers dug up from old landfills can still be read FORTY YEARS LATER!!!
no one wants a landfill in their city..
Incinerators..
Mass incineration is the primary cause of dioxins in the environment.
Incinerators are responsible for 70% of all dioxins produced.
Dioxins cause, cancer in adults, developmental defects in children, genetic & birth defects.
Dioxins are the most dangerous toxin known to man & there is no safe level.
So, what's the big issue??
The average person litters
4.4 pounds
(1.99581 kg)
a day.
29 pounds
(13.1542 kg)
a week.
1,600 pounds
(725.7478 kg)
a year!

That is enough to cover Texas 2.5 times
Nature...
An incinerator is a container for burning garbage or a plant designed for burning garbage on a large-scale.
Runoff..
How long will our trash last in the ocean??
it takes...
aluminum:
200 - 500 years
glass:
1 - 2 million

years
plastic bottles:
450

years
QUESTION IS....
BY RECYCLING !!!
We can recycle up to 75% of our total
trash
But what is Recycling
Recycling is when you take old materials and break them down, so that they can be used to make new materials
What can be recycled???
GLASS
METAL
PLASTIC
PAPER
Glass recycling is often separated into colors because glass keeps its color after recycling.
For every ton of recycled glass turned into new products, 315 kilograms of extra carbon dioxide that would have been released during the creation of new glass are saved.
Recycled paper can be made from three different types of paper;
mill broke

(paper scrap and trimmings),
pre-consumer waste

(paper that was discarded before consumer use), and
post-consumer waste
(paper discarded after consumer use, such as old newspapers).
plastics are not typically recycled into the same type of plastic.
Recycling old aluminum uses only 5% of the energy used to make new aluminum.
Aluminum can be recycled from cans, bicycles, computers, cookware, wires, cars, planes and other sources.
metal is melted down and made into blocks called
'Ignots'
....
each ignot is made up of

1.6MILLION
drink cans!!!
Ignots are used to make new cans..
Unlike other materials, aluminum can be used over and OVER again!!
NOT EASY TO
RECYCLE!!
WHAT CAN
WE
DO??

START
small
. think
BIG
!
AT HOME/ SCHOOL...
USE LESS
RE-USE
RECYCLING BINS
???
HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR TOWN??
GREAT PACIFIC
TRASH PATCH
Animals living in the Great Pacific..
HOW DO WE HELP????
Remember, you can go out and make a difference!!
WE
CAN

CHANGE

THE

WORLD
!!
