It's original opening was delayed due to the Civil War and didn't open until 1868.
With the first Opening Convocation in September of the same year, there were 9 students and 4 faculty members.
Polk envisioned the university to be equivalent to Oxford and Cambridge in England.

Meet General Education requirements before beginning of senior year,
In basic essence:

2 Writing-intensive courses
1 by the end of sophomore year and the other as a part of your major.
2 PE classes (not including in your 32 courses)
Complete 32 full academic courses + 2 PE credits
Earn 1 PE credit by end of freshman year, the other sophomore year
NOTE: The above is an interpretation of the General Education requirements for the 2017 and on graduates.
Of the 32, no more than 13 full courses may be presented in any single subject.
Complete an academic major, including one writing-intensive course in the major.
Attain a GPA of at least 2.00 on all academic work.
Spend at least 4 semesters in residence, including the final 2 semesters.
Final year, each student is required to pass a comprehensive examination in the major field before graduation.
Go to Career & Leadership Development website for help on how to get ready and look for internships.
If accepted to an Unpaid Internship, apply for funding from Sewanee and you may get a portion of the $400,000 Sewanee gives to students who do unpaid internships.
