Transcript of Divergent
By: Olivia Iannello
The author of the book Divergent is Veronica Roth. She was born in New York City on August 19, 1988 and was raised in Barrington, Illinois. Her mother and her love for books influenced Veronica to start writing. To write Divergent, Veronica was influenced by psychology and the song Sweet Sacrifice by Evanescence. Some other books that Veronica has written are Insurgent, Allegiant, Four: A Divergent Story Collection, Shards and Ashes, Hearken, and more.
The book I chose to do for my book talk is Divergent. Divergent is a fantastic book with many twists and turns and is sure to leave you hanging of your seat.
For my book talk I chose to do the book Divergent. Divergent is a fantastic book that I love and it has lots of twists and turns that is sure to leave you on the edge of your seat.
In Chicago, about 100 years into the future, society has been divided into 5 different groups. Factions. Each faction reflects a different virtue. Abnegation is for the selfless, Candor is for the honest, Dauntless is for the brave, Amity is for the peaceful, and Erudite is for the intelligent. You must take a test that tells you which faction you fit best in, or in some cases, factions. They call it Divergent. It's when you fit into more than one faction. Regardless of what the test says, once they turn 16, every teenager must choose which faction they would like to be a part of. They could stay in the faction of which they were born in or they could transfer to a new one. Young Beatrice Prior must make a decision. Stay with her family and loved ones in a faction she believes she isn't right for or transfer to into another faction, leaving her family behind. Beatrice Prior was a simple Abnegation girl. Daughter of Natalie and Andrew Prior and sister of Caleb Prior. Being in Abnegation, she always had to think of others before herself, to never be selfish. But she always felt that she was never selfless enough and there was a reason for that. She belonged in Dauntless, and Erudite, and Abnegation. Beatrice Prior was Divergent, and believe me, that was NOT a good thing.
After a last minute decision, Beatrice leaves her family behind and is starting a new life in Dauntless. Tris, formerly known as Beatrice, Prior is now learning that maybe Dauntless isn't as easy as she thought it would be. You can't just show up in Dauntless and expect to be one of them. You have to work for it. So now, Tris must complete a highly competitive initiation that includes jumping off buildings, fighting, knife throwing and more while she juggles friends and a new found love interest with her mysterious instructor, Four. On top of all that Tris needs to stop the Erudite leader, Jeanine Matthews, from overthrowing the Abnegation faction and prevent her from killing Tris' loved ones. And if that wasn't enough, Tris needs to protect herself from also being killed by Jeanine who is set out to kill every Divergent in existance. So when Jeanine finds out about Tris' Divergency, Tris gets captured by Jeanine to be tested on. At least, until they kill her, that is.
"I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent."

I think Divergent is similar to the book The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a about a girl named Katniss who has to fight to the death and try and survive. Both Tris and Katniss need to protect themselves and the ones they love while trying to overthrow the government. They are both courageous and they always want to try and protect their friends and family. That is why I think Divergent is like the Hunger Games.
I recommend this book for anyone who like lots of action and adventure . I think this book appeals to both girls and boys because Divergent has lots of different genres that can appeal to everyone. It grabs your attention from the start and as you continue reading you lose yourself more and more into the story and you get really attached to the characters too.
Thank you for listening to my presentation. I hope you enjoyed it and I hope I have persuaded you to read the book.
I chose this quote because Tris finally understands who she is and she isn't confused about herself anymore. She's learning more and more about who she is and where she belongs and I think that that is really important.
