Transcript of Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China Built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by the Xiongnu from the north and rebuilt and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century. The most comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has recently concluded that the entire Great Wall, with all of its branches, stretches for 8,851.8 km (5,500.3 mi). The Great Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. The Great Wall is one of the largest building construction projects ever completed. The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huangdi Armies were stationed along the wall as a first line of defense against the invading nomadic Hsiung Nu tribes north of China Signal fires from the Wall provided early warning of an attack. Three groups of people built the wall. They were soldiers, common people and criminals. The Great Wall of China is becoming shorter and shorter day by day due to the natural erosion and human activity.
