Viola was born on August 11, 1965. She was born on her grandmothers farm, on the former Singleton Plantation, in ST. Matthews, South Carolina. She was the second youngest of six children. School Viola majored in theatre at a Rhode Island College graduating in 1988. In 2002 she recived an honoary doctorate in Fine Arts from the college. Viola also attended the Julliard School for four years, as a member of the Drama Division's Group 22. (1989-1993) By Destiny Anne Charron Viola Davis Viola's Family Viola's father was Dan Davis, he was a horse trainer. Viola's mother was Mary Alice, she was a maid, factory worker, and housemaker, as well as a civil rights activist. Viola's family moved to Central Falls, Rhode Island a few months after Viola was born. Awards In 2001, Viola won the Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for her portrayal of Tonya in King Headly 2, a "35-year-old mother fighting eloquently for the right to abort a pregnancy. Early Life Viola's Films Viola appeared in numerous films including, three films directed by Steven Soderbergh-Out of Sight, Solaris and traffic, as well as Syriana, which Mr.Soderbergh produced. More Awards On June 30, 2009 Viola was inducted into the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. On June 13, 2012, Viola won her second Tony Award for her role as Rose Maxson in a revival of August Wilson's Fences. Viola is the second African-American woman to win the award, after Phylicia Rashad Nominations Viola garnered numerous award nominations, including a Golden Globe Award, BAFTA, Screen actors guild, and an Academy Award. Magazines In 2012, Time Magazine listed Viola as one of the influential people in the world. Also in 2012, Glamour Magazine named Viola Glamour's film Actress of the year. Walk of Fame Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of commerce annouced that Viola was part of the new group of entertainment professionals who have been selected to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame 2013. Family Viola has been married to actor Julius Tennon since June 2003. They have a daughter, named Genesis. They adopted her as a newborn in October 2011. Viola is a Stepmother to Tennon's two sons from previous relationships.
