Queen Victoria's reign began when she was 18
Her reign was the beginning of one that would see dramatic change in many aspects of life and work Ideals:
Sunday was a time of rest
People copied the way that the Royal family lived
It was workdays which boosted the economy and funded a family's needs Travel and communication Faster travel was made possible with the invention of the steam train (steam-powered machinery provided a huge boost to the overall economy) Monetary system 12 pence = 1 shilling
In today's society
1 shilling = 5 pounds
1kg carrots: 71 pounds
Paper notes were introduced, but people rejected them at first
There was a decline in the use of gold and silver in currency.
Banks started issuing their own currencies which caused widespread panic Farming and industry Farming increased with the invention of steam-powered machinery
Many moved from the country to towns The Industrial Revolution Began in the mid 18th Century and ended in the mid 19th Century
Coal, iron and steel made the industrial revolution possible
Between the 1750-1900, the rapid growth of population created a huge demand for food resources, clothing essentials and housing
The development of steam machinery had a dramatic effect Sunday was a time of rest.
Women would have many children because the mortality rate was extremely high
Ladies who lived in grand houses could usually play the piano and sing
