Characters: (Fan-made video) Looking For Alaska By: John Green Theme shown in the story: One of the main themes in Looking For Alaska is that we all are in some labyrinth, whatever it may be, and we are all also looking for a way to escape it. First, Pudge is stuck in his old ways, back in Florida. He needed a way to escape, and decided to come to a new school in search of adventure. Alaska's labyrinth is that she holds her self to blame for her mother's death, so she's very depressed, and she escaped it "straight and fast". Last, Pudge is stuck in another labyrinth, he is confused as to why things have to happen the way they did and if he could have prevented it. His final escape was to simply forgive himself. Theme shown in the story: Another theme shown throughout the story is that even when things don't go as planned, you have to carry on and make it through. After the tragedy, Pudge and all the others blame themselves. They beat them selves up and think they could have done something to change it. This ties along with the previous theme, they ended this by forgiving themselves and coming together. Summary: Looking For Alaska is a wonderful story by John Green that allows you to follow Miles "Pudge" Halter as he goes in search of a "great perhaps". After transferring to the private school that his father previously went to, Pudge meets what will soon become his best friends; The Colonel and Alaska. Instantly, Pudge is attracted to Alaska's mysterious personality. His new found friends help Pudge find exactly what he came here for. Through their year at school he discovers adventure and love, until the day tragedy strikes and he questions what he has really gained in his experience at the school. Together, him and his friends wonder what the meaning of life and the labyrinth could be. “The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.” “It's not life or death, the labyrinth. Suffering. Doing wrong and having wrong things happen to you. That's the problem. Bolivar was talking about the pain, not about the living or dying. How do you get out of the labyrinth of suffering?” Young Adult Fiction "Hi, I'm Alaska Young. I go to school with Pudge and The Colonel, they're my best friends. We love pulling pranks on The Weekenders. I miss my boyfriend, he lives back in my home town so I don't see him that often." Alaska Young Personality: Witty, Self-destructive, Mysterious, Out-going Miles "Pudge" Halter "Hey, I'm Miles, but my friends here call me "Pudge". They call me that because I'm really skinny and they want to be ironic, haha. I didn't have many friends back in Florida. I just started going to Culver Creek this year, and it has been the "Great Perhaps" I was looking for. I'm very interested in knowing peoples' last words." Personality: Naive, Caring, Loyal, Sweet Chip "The Colonel" Martin "The name is Chip, but call me The Colonel. I got that nick name because I'm the brains behind all of our pranks...despite what Alaska may tell you. I'm here at Culver Creek on scholarship, so I'm really smart. I've known Alaska and the others for awhile but this year Pudge came in as my roommate and we've gotten pretty close." Personality: Confident, A leader, Loyal, mischievous (Fan-made art) Other Characters Takumi: Friend of the characters listed above. He likes to rap. He also has a crush on Alaska. Lara: An exchange student that was originally good friends with Alaska, then dates Pudge for a short amount of time. The Eagle: The Dean of Culver Creek. His house is in the woods right next to the campus, so he is always watching out for pranks. http://www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=7311798&height=267&width=200 http://www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=7312119&height=267&width=200 http://www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=7312185&height=267&width=200
