Nelson Mandela was born on July 18,1918 in Mvezo ,South Africa.His father was Gadla Mphakanyiswa and his mother was Nosekeni Nonqaphi Fanny.
Nelson Mandela's Childhood
Nelson Mandela had to save his country from apartheid(which means a rigid policy of segregation of the nonwhite population).Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) and created the ANC Youth League (ANCYL).Nelson Mandela was arrested in a countrywide police swoop on December 5, 1955, which led to the 1956 Treason Trial.On March 21,1960, during a protest, police had to kill 69 people.That's how wild it all got.
Freeing his country
The 1956 treason trial didn't go well.He was sentenced to life prison. That mean he stayed in prison for 26 and a half years! The president Frederik Willem de Klerk ordered Mandela out and they both won the Nobel Peace Prize.The government and the people realized that apartheid wasn't good.

Nelson Mandela was elected president in April,1994. His inauguration took place on May 10,1994.His term ended on June 14,1999.He was the first black president for his country.He was succeeded by Thabo Mbeki.
