"P Pops"
Write down questions and goals in advance (but don't look at during interview)

Prep participants (i.e. don't talk directly into mic or bang table)

Test levels with questions to participants: "What did you have for breakfast?"

Ask leading questions: Best question is "Then what happened?"

Signal that you’re listening, i.e. nodding and smiling

Think ahead but be present: Are all the pieces of the story on tape?

Wrap up with this critical question: “Now I need to record the sound of the room with no one talking for 30 seconds. While I do this, could you think of anything you’d like to add or something I didn’t ask about?”

"Stories about race and culture should include the main tenets of:
Are there fascinating characters?
Is there conflict?
And is it surprising?

Your job is not to do a story about culture. Your job is to do a story about people."
Stephanie Foo
"This American Life"
on Transom.org
"Show a people as one thing,
as only one thing,
over and over again,
and that is what they become.
It is impossible to talk about
the single story without
talking about power…
power is the ability
not just to tell the story
of another person,
but to make it the
definitive story of that person.”
