Intertidal Biome By: Jamie Lombardo and TaraMurphy Soil v.s. Sand- fine grains of rock and shell combined together. Rocky(can have a steep slope like the pacific north west intertidal, or a gentle declining slope like the intertidal on the coast of Maine.) Prevalent Animals California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) Length: 5 1/2- 7 1/2 ft.
Diet: fish, squid, and octopus
Cool Fact: the california sea lion is the most common seal found in circus acts. Size Compared to Human Range Diamondback Terrapin Length: 4-9 in.
Diet: shellfish, clams, snails, plant shoots and worms
Cool Fact: At night, the diamondback terrapin burries itself in mud. Size Compared to Human Region Herring Gull (Malaclemys terrapin) (Larus argentatus) Length: 21 1/2- 26 in.
Diet: eggs, fish, waste, small mammals, and young birds
Cool Fact: Herring gulls build their nests on islands, beaches, and on cliff slopes. Size Compared to Human Region Harbor Seal Length: 4 1/2- 6 ft.
Diet: squid, crustaceans, and fish
Cool Fact: Habor seal pups can swim from birth. (phoca vitulina) Size Compared to Humans Region Prevalent Vegetation American Dune Grass (Leymus mollis) Region Where on intertiadal biome: dunes
Size: up to 6 ft. tall
Adaption(s) to withstand intertidal:reflects harmful sun rays and has thick, shiny leaves that hold lots of water
Cool fact: Roots of American dune grass spread underneath sand to keep the grass from being removed by natural causes( flooding, blowing away, ect.) Pig Face (carpobrotus rossii) Where on intertidal biome: dunes and rocky headlands
Size: flowers are 4-6 cm. in diameter
Adaption(s) to withstand intertidal:Leaves have a triangular shape that stores water on hot, dry summer days
Cool fact: Pig face can sometimes survive the frost Found on the pacific coast
