What is a Chromium Compound?
Chromium Compound is the chemical make up of the element Chromium.

According to the EPA: The metal chromium is used mainly for making steel and other alloys. (1)
Chromium compounds, in either the chromium (III) or chromium (VI) forms, are used for chrome plating, the manufacture of dyes and pigments, leather and wood preservation, and treatment of cooling tower water. Smaller amounts are used in drilling muds, textiles, and toner for copying machines. (1)

Chromium VI is observed in this project because it is found in pollution by POSCO and as well as the health effect possibly linked to my parents.

F. Ripoli - Ripoli's job at USS-POSCO is in Safety Awareness. His title although not specific, is basically to ensure that employees are preventing hazards from occuring and are being met.
When talking to him on the phone, he was very vague and was suspsicious about my intentions in the my request for a tour of the facility. I was simply curious as to what the facility looked like and just what saftey was provided to the employees. Ripoli delayed my request of a tour by saying he would have to file paperwork and speak with other mangement officials to get permission. He also had no knowledge of the industires previous environment violations or that they are listed as one of the top polluters in the county.
Ripoli didnt get back to me until earlier this week which was too late due to deadlines but i do plan to visit the facility to further investigate precautions of safety
Chromium Compounds and USS-POSCO
USS-POSCO Industries
Located in Pittsburg, CA of Contra Costa County. USS Posco IND. is #8 on the list of top polluters in this county. Reason for picking this particular site to focus on is because I live in Pittsburg and my dad has worked there almost 30 years.

Chromium VI is my focus because employees at UPI are exposed to twice the suggested levels of CVI and are at risk for cancers, low sperm count and other health issues.

Health effects
considered a carcinogen, Chromium VI also attacks the respiratory system at lungs, causing shortness of breath, wheezing, and considered a neurotoxicant.
In doing my research I'm left with the question, What now? What is the next step? Although I wish I could tell my dad to quit his job and find a job that has little no exposure to Chromium VI or any other harmful chemicals. As mentioned, I plan to visit UPI and hopefully get some answers as well as further investigate my dad's health conditions and see if there is in fact a direct correlation. I also hope to learn the safety and precautions that go into reducing the amount of chromium VI being released.
