Writing Core
Identifying Gaps
GENRE: What type of text should you be writing?
AUDIENCE: Who will be reading your text?
PURPOSE: The purpose of your text, i.e. to convince
STYLE: Your chosen writing style i.e. formal

Why do you need
GAPS?
In your writing exam, the examiner wants to see that you can adapt the way you write in different styles to meet different genres, audiences and purposes.
Purpose
Ensure you take into account when writing any piece the following:

Spelling
Grammar
Punctuation
Paragraphs
Sentence/Text Structure

Genre
This means the form of your text

Examples:
Newsletter
bold heading
presentation devices i.e. boxes,pictures,captions etc.
Letter
address at the top
date
start with ' Dear...'
Sign, ' Yours..'


Signal your purpose by:
explaining why you are writing you letter in opening sentence
explaining what your article is about in the intro paragraph
stating what your newsletter is aiming to do in a bold headline
Purpose could be to:
Persuade
Explain
Describe
Inform

Style
Style can be either Formal or Informal
The tone of the text could be for example :

Chatty
Detailed
Serious
Personal
Emotional...


Audience
You can adapt you text to be suitable for different audiences by:
using the right vocabulary
using the right words and expressions
if writing a magazine article choose a suitable publication
