What is a Volcano?
A volcano is a Vent in the crust of the Earth from which molten rock, ash, gas, and steam escape from. Most volcanoes are found on the boundaries of enormous plates. These plates make up all of the Earth's surface. There are 3 types of plate boundaries Divergent, Convergent, and Transform boundaries

Mt. Fuji
Mt. Fuji is volcano located on the main and largest island of Japan, the Honshu island.
Mt. Fuji's Plate Boundaries
It is located just 100 kilometers or 60 miles southwest of Tokyo the largest city and capital of Japan. It also lies near three minor cities including Gotemba to the east, Fujiyoshida to the north, and Fujinomiya to the southwest. Next to it there are six bodies of water; Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Yamanaka, Lake Sai, Lake Motosu, Lake Shoji and further away, the Pacific Ocean.

Where it is
There were many phases of rock layering in Mt. Fuji. The first phase was called the Sen-Komitake phase, which was the core part of the volcano. This was followed by Komitake Fuji, a layer of basalt believed to be formed several hundred years ago. After there was the “Old Fuji” layer or phase that formed over top of the Komitake layer. Today is the “New Fuji” layer covering the outer parts that we see, this was formed over the “Old Fuji” around 10,000 years ago.

~Tokyo is the 14th largest city and in the world with a population of more than 13 million people. It is the largest metropolitan area. It is the capital and largest city in Japan, the 10th largest population in the world.
~Japan has an ever increasing elderly population. Since 1935 (to 2010) the percentile of people living in Japan over the age of sixty went from 4.7% to 23.1%. This is a problem because people of an older age are more likely to die in a natural disaster (volcano eruption) More than 50% of Japans population lives in Tokyo only 2% of Japan’s land.
~Tokyo has been named one of the three “command center” cities of the world next to London and New York City. It is also one of the biggest economic cities in the world with a GDP of 1.479 trillion U.S. dollars. It holds 51 of the Fortune Global 500, the most in one city.

Most volcanoes are found on the boundaries
of the enormous plates that make up the Earth's surface. Some of the most violent eruptions take place along convergent boundaries, where one plate margin is forced beneath another. The most famous such boundary is the circum-Pacific belt bordering the Pacific Ocean; mountain ranges of this “Ring of Fire” have seen gigantic explosions. Volcanic activity is also common at divergent boundaries, where two plates slowly pull apart and allow molten rock to escape to the surface. Transform boundaries are way two plates slide passed each other where they change abruptly. Yet another type of volcanic activity is a “hot spot” near the middle of the Pacific Plate where plumes of partially melted rock rise from below the Earth's crust.

How do we know when this will happen?
They are able to predict when Mt. Fuji will erupt because of the pressure and the amount of magma in the magma chamber
Our experiment
Our Hypothesis
I believe the amount of magma in the chamber is a good indicator of the amount of time the volcano takes to erupt. I think that when we add more vinegar to the experiment, the amount of time it takes for the vinegar and baking soda to react will decrease from the amount of time it takes for it to erupt with less vinegar.

Our Variables
Independent variable: Amount of vinegar in the magma chamber
Dependent variable: How quickly it erupts after we pour in the vinegar
Constant: Size of magma chamber, amount of baking soda we use

Vinegar, baking soda, measuring cups, water bottle, sink, stopwatch, goggles
1) Pour 1 cup of baking soda in the water bottle
2) Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar in the bottle
3) Record the amount of time it takes for the volcano to erupt
4) Clean the bin and the water bottle completely
5) Repeat the process 2 more times
6) Then repeat steps 1-6 with 1 cup of vinegar
7) Repeat steps 1-6 with 1 1/2 cups of vinegar
75mL Vinegar: 2.65, 2.76, 2.84, average=2.75
100mL of vinegar: 3.25, 2.91, 3.24, average=3.13
125mL of vinegar: 3.64, 3.46, 3.57, average=3.56
In conclusion
We have came to the conclusion that the volcano will take longer to erupt if there is more magma in chamber than if there is less magma in the chamber. We know this because when we added more vinegar to the baking soda it took longer to erupt, and the vinegar represents the magma. The only problem with our experiment is we didn't add the factor of heat. Because we were not able to add the element of heat, we were not able to predict the time it will take for Mt. Fuji to erupt.
How big of an impact will this be?
The eruption isn't the only problem for Tokyo. The eruption will more than likely be triggered by an earthquake, just like it's previous eruption in 1707. The earthquake was predicted to be a 9.0 earthquake (extremely dangerous) by a Russian scientist. He said there will most likely be a 9.0 earthquake near Tokyo in the next two years. If this earthquake is a 9.0, it will definitely cause the eruption and add insult to injury.
